I've been in marketing for 10 years...
I've had the following job positions (from oldes to most recent):
*Marketing assistant for a concert venue (entertainment)
*Marketing assistant, marketing programs manager and strategic relationship manager at a marketing consulting firm (high tech)
*Product marketing manager, channel marketing/partner marketing manager for a high-tech firm
*Senior marketing representative for a public transit agency.
I really like marketing, but the field is hugely varied. You can do everything from research, strategic marketing to marcom, to product development to sales support to pr/media to strategic partner marketig to general marketer or events marketer. It really depends on your interest and what's available in your area. I am basically a general marketer because I've had experience with a bunch of different marketing activities and strategies, but still I have certain preferences and strengths (partner marketing) and dislikes (marcom)--although I do them all to get the job done.

I also have a degree in marketing and I am currently working on my MBA. There is a lot you can do with a marketing degree. Depending on where you decide to take it, you may want to consider getting a graduate degree, but working first is always a good idea. Unfortunately I didn't work before I got my MBA. It has hurt me a little because I have too much education for 'undergrad' internships and jobs, but I don't have the experience level for 'MBA level' jobs and internships.
Anyway...you may persue a career in PR, Advertising, Promotions, Market Research, Marketing/Brand/Product Management, etc. If you haven't already done so, try to intern somewhere. I thought that I really liked promotions until I spent a semester in a promotions firm. Most marketing firms (advertisting, pr, promotions, etc.) will hire students straight from undergrad. You may also want to start considering if you would prefer to work for a marketing firm (like an ad agency) who is outsourced to do marketing or for an internal marketing department for a company. For me, I want to be a marketing manager for a mid-sized company or eventually a brand manager for a larger company.
Start searching and networking now...I had no idea how long a job search takes until I got here!!! I would love to talk to you more if you want more specific stuff, but I am at work right now, feel free to pm me.

Dude this industry SUCKS right now for jobs.
I'm doing a lot of promotional shit jobs right now to get my foot in the door, but I was hoping with a good school and experience I wouldn't have to resort to this. My advice would be let EVERYONE know you're graduating, and start looking for little things you can do for experience now.

I'm trying to get into PR...Jules is right though, the industry SUCKS right now. There are enough small companies though that, if you have the patience (and time to look), I think you can find something.

I'm currently in Marketing/PR.
I'm going to echo everyone else and say that the market sucks for these types of jobs right now. I graduated last May and had a hard time finding a job. I have a background in Finance and almost went into a Finance related job since there's a lot more of those jobs out there than Marketing. It took me three months to find something!
Network, Network, Network. With Ad/PR, you will not find a job unless you know someone. Putting a resume on Monster or another online website will not get you a job in Marketing. The reason I got my job is because I kept in touch with my favorite professor; a friend of hers was working at a nearby company that needed an entry level Marketing/Public Relations coordinator. She recommended me and after two interviews, I had the job.
I love marketing. It's dynamic and I never do the same thing twice. It keeps me busy (although I'll flake off for a little while and log onto GC ).
Marketing jobs are more easily found with experience and once you get your foot in the door somewhere, you're good.
I want to get into Marketing Research or Product Management. Both of these marketing subfields are used in my dream job: Fashion Buyer for Bloomingdale's (like Rachel from Friends).
