Gunman Targets Delta Chi Fraternity House
As members of the Delta Chi fraternity were winding down the night early Thursday morning, an unknown gunman fired four to five rounds at the fraternity house.
At about 2:05 a.m., a vehicle drove past the house, located at 1803 10th Ave, and shot a parked car about five times. No one was injured in the shooting.
John Morgan, junior kinesiology major and Delta Chi member, said he was standing just 10 feet from where the bullets struck.
“I was standing outside talking on my cell phone when I heard pop, pop,” Morgan said. “I turned and saw a dark SUV, and I saw three more shots, and then it drove off. This could have been me dead or someone else dead.”
The vehicle drove away westbound on Cranford Place, police said.
The bullets impacted junior Delta Chi member Brad Hartman’s 1992 Ford Escort, which was parked in front of the house, piercing three of his tires. He said he’s more worried about why his car was shot than the actual damage.
“It makes me think, What could I have done to make somebody mad enough to shoot at a car?” Hartman said.
Sgt. Joe Tymkowych, Greeley police public information officer, said Thursday afternoon that there are few leads in the case.
“They have a couple of leads, but nothing solid yet,” he said. “We have a detective that’s assigned to the case, and it’s in investigations now.”
Tymkowych said police do not know how many people were involved in the drive-by.
Delta Chi President Josh Drexler said he doesn’t know why anyone would target the house or members of the fraternity.
“We have no idea why,” he said. “This goes way beyond anything anyone ever expected to happen. This is the last thing I ever expected to happen here. I’m just happy that no one got hurt.”
Junior marketing major and Delta Chi Vice President Joseph Dickinson echoed Drexler’s comments.
“We want this stuff to end,” Dickinson said. “This is serious, and it goes way beyond graffiti. We’re tired of it. We don’t look for fights. It just needs to end.”
UNC Police Chief Wendy Rich-Goldschmidt sent an e-mail to all students and faculty Thursday, asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Greeley Police Department.
***This stuff in Greeley is really getting out of hand. I'm glad no one was hurt but really, how could someone do this?!
