Talking What you LOVE about your major!

I love being a music major because:

--Here, the Music Department is a different world from the rest of campus. We never leave that building. We literally spend more hours there in classes, rehearsals, and practicing than our own homes/dorm rooms. I love it though, because we all know each other.

--Because of the close-knit atmosphere, you can totally sit down and hang out with your professors. And you know all of them very well. My sax teacher often takes me and the other sax majors out to lunch, and it doesn't seem weird to me at all.

--Even though it is a very stressfull and time-consuming major, I wouldn't change it for anything in the world. I mean, I get credit (and an easy A) for improvizing in Jazz Band when I could be sitting in a boring lecture. I sit in Studio Class with the other saxophone majors as we toss around ideas about our instrument, or play for each other. I take classes in Conducting, where I get to prepare to conduct the university's Wind Ensemble for my final grade. All in all, it's a great major, and my career will be even better. As my saxophone teacher words it, "Beats the hell out of working for a living!"

Other majors, let's share!

History Major -

I just love learning about what happened in the past and how it influences the present.... as well as discovering little things that change your viewpoint on the present. For example the Bible... some may view it as a historical document others as a fanciful tale... but in either case certain practices mentioned in it are interpreted differently now... case in point the soldiers giving Jesus vinegar when he asked for water... most assume that the soldiers were just tormenting him further, and while this may be true, not for the reasons most think.... the Romans attributed restoritive powers to vinegar and wounded gladiators were given it to help them... so the soldiers may have been trying to prolong Jesus's agony or maybe some were sympathetic and trying to help.... it's learning things like this that i love....

i love working in the classroom with high school kids. it's so much fun! also, the education department here is like a really close-knit family. we have class together, we study together and we hang out together outside of class time.

English/Pre-Med

I loved being an English major because English encompasses so many other disciplines, and helps you become a well-rounded individual; History, psychology, sociology, and art are intertwined with literature, and by the time you graduate you are famililar with all those areas of study. Also, as an English major, you are taught to develop analysis skills that can be used in a myriad of ways throughout life. Enevitable cons: English professors have the tendency to be the most anal-rentetive human beings on the face of the planet, you often have the urge to correct people when they're talking and edit random emails, you have to read hundreds of pages of literature per week, and by the time you graduate you won't want to write another paper for as long as you live.

I loved being Pre-Med because the rigorous courseload prepares you for the challenging and exciting world of medical school. Enevitable cons: You will have dreams in which you are forced to balance chemical equations (or maybe that was just me), you have to study for class AND the daunting MCAT, and throughout all your studying and late nights you are faced with the disheartening reality that only 44% of medical school applicants are accepted into medical school .

Why I love my math major:

1. It's a great way to meet men, since so few women are math majors.

2. I think that a well written proof is beautiful.

3. I've always wanted to be an eccentric prof. And math profs are some of the most eccentric I've ever seen!

4. I can look at d (e^x)/y and laugh because I actually get that joke.

5. Math jokes are the greatest.

6. I need some way to explain my collection of math books.

That, and I just don't see me being anything else.

I'm an Elementary Ed major. I get to do arts and crafts and be graded for them. The other night I colored a bunch of pictures... and I was doing my homework.

This is great!!! I'm a grad student in English (about to graduate), and I always have to explain why an English major is useful/worthwhile. I love your comment about becoming familiar with other fields. You should write a department pamphlet

Erica

P.S. My urge to correct grammar is almost compulsive!!

Urban Studies Major

the classes are always interesting.

There are always numerous internships as well as scholarships available.

Most classes are small, so you can interact with the professor.

the College of Urban Affairs' Graduate Program is ranked second in the nation behind the University of Kansas.

I was making a visual for a presentation in Gower's class... I had bought new pastels and wanted to use them. No methods yet...

Ecology (Environmental Biology) Major

It's interesting, and definately one of the more "Big Picture" Sciences. Not only do you learn about different kinds of plants/animals/insects, but geology/climatic stuff, the processes that govern their distribution,.

It also is on the front stage with conservation efforts, so I know I'll have a job when I'm done. That is certainly a plus.

Broadcast Communications

I get to play with video cameras and produce things that are on TV a lot. And I get to play around with computers. It's a lot of work, but a lot more fun than sitting around researching stuff. We get to do so much hands-on work. I've had a few classes involving research, but it's mostly just production or theory.

Social Studies Ed Major

RACooper said it best to explain the history aspect (it goes for geography, poli sci and all the other social sciences too!!)

and as for the education aspect.. I love the thought of "opening doors" for students and exposing them to new ideas, thoughts, beliefs and worlds all in a 50 minute time block

I have 1 semester left of classes and then student teaching.. I am so excited to finally have my own classroom!!!
