Coaching

I thought I would start a thread on coaching, since there seem to be so many of us on here.

Here's a place where we can vent, our celebrate our victories!

Good luck to everyone with games the last part of the week.

This is my second season of coaching girls hockey. I love it.

Last year we made it to the semi-finals but lost in shoot-outs (I hate shoot-outs...it's the worst way to settle a game, but there's not much you can when there are time constraints).

Our girls went from last place to second place in the regular season. All the girls worked hard and played their best and we all had tons of fun, which is the most imprtant thing.

Since I coach house-league, it important that the girls know that the #1 reason for being there is to have fun. Second is learning or imporving your skills. Winning comes last. Sure it's nice to win and we all want to, but if you're not having fun, what's the point of playing. I measure our success if the girls show up for the games, whether we're winning or losing.

I am so excited about this season. I have some girls from last year and some new girls. Our first game is September 29th.

We played in our first tournament today. We placed third out of 23 teams! I'm so proud of my girls, they finally played like I knew they could.

We play again on Tuesday.

Good luck to everyone who has games this week.

well, if you remember my prob. about the ref. calling the match at 25 instead of 15, he was wrong. Too late to do anything about it now. I am soo mad...that would have made us 2-0! We play another series on Wed...should be pie. My outside hitter are outstanding this year....I just have 1 setter issue. We'll see......

Good luck to everyone this week!

We have our third district game tonight against a school I used to attend!! The head coach now was there and the head coach when I went there...........and the JV coach, good friend of mine. It should be fun, and I'm pretty sure we'll win. I have 3 outside hitters, 2 middle blockers, and 5 defensive specialists, and 2 setters. It's hell with all of those back row players. What kind of offenses do you guys run with your volleyball teams? Usually we do a 5-1 but when one of my OHs is out.............we do a 4-2. Anyway, just curious!!!

We have a game today as well, but its still preseason. I'm not sure how we'll do, I'm not familiar with the school.

Right now we're running a modified 5-1. I only have 1 really reliable setter, and 2 that are ok if we have to use them. I have one awesome middle blocker, and two outside hitters that are decent. I have quite a few defensive specialists that I can put in as well.

We'll see how it goes today!

motivation

Hey...wondering if any of yall could help me out. My team has hit a serious slump and needs some big-time motivation. They have gotten to the point they don't even want to play. Practice is terrible and today's game was even worse. We were down by 6 in the second match and didn't even care from that point on. The last game was just as bad. I have today's films and we are going to view them twice tomorrow....once for attitude and intensity and the second time for mechanical errors and mistakes. What else would you suggest doing for these girls. My blood pressure is rising....I have never had a team that didn't care before! Skill wise they are awesome...attitude wise they suck!

Our girls lost our first game 5-1. We were also short 6 players. 2 girls that we drafted dropped out of the league and 4 girls were sick or unable to come. We actually got 2 more players and hopefully we'll havge our full team next week. Unfortunately we don't have a full time goalie so our girls are going to have to suck it up and each take one for the team.

I wish I had advice to give you. My team has been in a slump. We started off well, then have performed poorly in almost every game since. I think they freak out when we get into a game situation. We lost Thursday 22-25, 21-25 to a team. We played that team again on Sat at a tournament and beat them 25-15.

I've tried to up the intensity of the practice, and that's seemed to help. Have you tried pulling each girl aside and talking to them? What about team building games etc. Are the girls having problems with each other? Maybe these are some things to think about.

I have uped the intensity at practice, but I honestly do not think these girls know the meaning of intense or desire. I have talked to them individually, as a team, showen them film of the games, etc. Their work ethic stinks. Yesterday in class, one of them WALKED a 21 min. mile, and when I said something to her about it and how that was going against one of our goals (I am also her PE teacher), her response was "SO?". I am at my wits end. We have soo much talent, but when you play in spurts, it doesn't win matches or games. One of my starters asked if she HAD to start....I said no and asked why she didn't want to start, expecting that she would say she was sick or something....her reponse was that her BF was in the stands and that made her nervous!!!! UGHHHHHHHH!

OMG!!!!! How old are these girls????? First, let me say, I am not a coach, but I did play sports in high school. I cannot believe that one of your players would disrepsect you in a sense to say, "SO?"! That is outrageous! We had some pretty strict coaches. Everything was, "yes ma'am, no ma'am", if ya slipped up, it sometimes constituted to running.

I also cannot believe a player would ask if she HAD to start! I know we were always fighting to be a starter to impress our b/f's in the stands, per se.

In any case, sounds like you definitely have your hands full. I cannot really give much advice, but I wish you the best of luck!!!
