Why are sororities bigger than fraternities

Why is it that a Sorority will have about 100-200 girls, but a fraternity usually is only about half of that size? This may not be the case everywhere, but it sure is here. I was just wondering why this was the case.

Sororities operate in a more controlled environment, and restrict the number of chapters on any given campus, for a number of possible reasons. Because most greek systems have fewer sorority chapters than fraternity chapters, the average size of the sorority chapters goes up.

While it may not be the entire reason, I believe fraternities are considerably more expensive to be a part of than sororities. Much of that difference is due to much higher insurance costs for fraternities who deal with many more Risk Management issues due to allowing alcohol, parties and other things in their houses.

Differing operating costs may be a factor, but the disparity in sorority and fraternity chapter sizes predates chapter liability insurance.

Perhaps. I can't prove it, but it certainly seemed like things were more equal when I was an undergrad back in the late 60's.

The SEC schools I attended had equal numbers of fraternity and sorority members but they had smaller and more numerous fraternities.

I think he is asking why the disparity in chapter sizes exists . . .

Perhaps it is just my ignorance of indepth sorority workings, but I feel the reason is largely inpart to the actual "pledgeship". Sororities have neither the length of pledgeship nor the hazing. Thus, it is (to an extent) easier to join a sorority.

Please do not flame me, I could be completely wrong because, as I stated above, I lack any hard knowledge of inner sorority structure.

I agree.

For example. You might have 1,200 fraternity members and 1,200 sorority members on campus. However, there would be 12 sororities on campus with each chapter at 100 women. And 20 fraternities with 60 members.

PanHell, if there is a Soroity who does not have membership, they will not let another come on campus!

It seems they do not like competition!

Fraternties on the other hand are much more open minded!

What you call lack of competition WE call a spirit of cooperation. It's worked pretty well for us.

Yes, while it seems to work well in PanHell, it is strange that on campi such as a 6,500 populatin there are only 3 Soroities. None are to size as so decided. My Question is why are they not.

Just maybe, with say 100 Ladies in said Organizations, there are many out there who would like to join someone else.

Same Campus, I started a local with 6 Fraternitys, and while there have been ups and downs, Male Greeks out number Female Greeks (Orgs that is 2-1).

What about Soroitys with 100 + members, who knows who? Is that what a Fraternal Organization is supposed to be, I dont no Sue, Mary, Aswanda, Maylyn, well who do I know in My Soroity?

This also goes for Male Greek Orgs. Okay?

I just Guess the idea of a Fraternal Greek Organization is to know and work with your Brothers/Sisters, not be just names and strangers!
