Question Just a random question

Hey i was wondering something and im sorry if this comes our mean i cant really show emotion online ya know.... Anyway We have Gamma sig on my campus and they run them selves very much like a social sorority. I wouldnt want them to get in trouble if they arent acting as per nationals so i dont really wanna go into details. but i guess if someone could please explain the differences between a social and service soroity i would really appricate it.

Thanks Again!

Alrighty...

My first question to you would be this: What is YOUR definition of a "Social" as well as "Service" GLO?

Yes, Gamma Sig is, by name, a SERVICE sorority. This means that service is REQUIRED by membership. You must complete a certain amount of hours to be an active member, as well as during our new member period. Also, many of the sorority's programs have a service focus (March of Dimes, Red Cross, MADD, etc.).

Now that doesn't mean we can't be "social". We have parties, events, sisterhood events (retreats and such) and we do things with other greeks if invited. I guess I would have to know the "details" that you say you don't want to get into. You can PM me if you'd like. I see in your profile that you go to LaSalle, so I already know what chapter you're talking about.

why is it that we cant socialize because we have service in our name?
we are still a sorority and we enjoy hanging out with each other
just because we are a service based organization does not mean we do not enter act with each other...

Thanks for all of your input and as i said i never meant to mean about it i just didnt understand. i respect everything that service sororities do especially for the community around them. But i guess amoung other things it is really hard to see them on campus acting a certain way but claiming there are different. Sorry for being so vague but here is an example. For recruitment, our panhal sets up rules for all the other sororities on campus such as you cant talk to pnm outside of formal recruitment to not influence their decision and so on. However since Gamma Sig doesnt have to follow panhal rules they were able to talk to alot of girls and actully talked many of them out of going to formal rushing. Also when alot of them discussed their sorority they downplayed the community service aspect and emphasized how everyone who came out got bids. Which sounds good to anyone. i mean this is one example and again i didnt mean to offend anyone. THis maybe just gave you some background on why i asked this question. Thanks again for sharing.

We didn't have Gamma Sig but we did have Alpha Phi Omega (which I was a member of). If I remember correctly we didn't have our informational sessions until after formal rush was over. You may want to bring that up with student affairs. Technically, you can pledge a service org and an NPC/NIC group at the same time, although it would be very time consuming, but I know of people who've done it.

If they are DOWNPLAYING service - the reason for their existence - that's a serious issue. No one is saying just do service and don't have any fun, but the main aspect is still service first and foremost.

Plus, don't take this the wrong way, but if GSS is able to talk girls out of NPC rush so easily - maybe there are problems that Panhellenic needs to work out among the sororities or with rush.

I agree with 33girl!

Hopefully that GSS chapter isn't downplaying service just to get more members. If anything, service to the community should be WHY these girls are interested, not necessarily because they didn't get a bid. Gamma Sig would prefer not to be the "Plan B" sorority when you didn't get into your sorority of choice. I really hope this isn't happening.

Definitely. I know that on my old campus we did get a bad rap for being "the sorority who will take anyone" (which I really don't understand why that's not a good thing...) But since I've been a sister, we've never had someone join just because they wanted to be in a sorority and didn't get a bid the week before. It's good to see all my sisters are there for the right reasons, and just want to help out the community as much as they can. Some girls are dragged to events by friends and are wary of us in the beginning (mostly from all the rumors that float around campus), but once they see how tight a group we are and how much fun we have, they are eager to become sisters!
