Cool 80's Prom

Hey guys I was wondering if any of you had did an 80's Prom party before, and what events and etc did you do at the prom. My fraternity (Sigma Tau Gamma) and Alpha Gamma Delta are doing this as part of our GONE GAMMA Day and I'm looking for some new ideas and insights. Please post.

Thanks
Johnny B

we had a revenge of the 80's mixer - most of us dressed up in stirrup pants, loud sweaters, blue eyeshadow, red lipstick, BIG earrings and of course - crimped hair

We had a twister tournament and a contest for most accurate portrayal of the decade.

SInce I was in college in the 80s, this makes me feel very old but I think what you first need to decide is early 80s or late 80s. Early 80s was the end of the preppy/ disco era (do a little Bee Gees and YMCA and I'd feel right at home): permed hair, blue eyeshadow (and that's coming back) and fitted sweaters (no midriffs though... high waist was in). Late 80s was punk rock, the 'Madonna' or Cyndy Lauper look and tights with long oversized sweaters. Not to be critical, but Twister was more 60s than 80s-- if you really want to be 80s, try Outburst or Trivial Pursuit or even charades (ok, yes, we were low tech).

I remember that they gave out Wayfarer like sunglasses at proms in the 80's. They were very Risky Business. I wore a pink dress with lots of lace to my prom. I thought that I looked good.

The 80s theme is very popular here with my students. Of course they all come to me wanting to know if I still have some good 80s stuff they can use (they've seen some of the pictures in my office). I especially love how they come look at my composites in my office and go "mullet, mullet, crimped hair, mullet,ooh...a crimped mullet!"

Cutiepatootie, I too am a hs class of '87 alum. Our prom theme was Bon Jovi's "Never Say Goodbye", and I wore a pearl grey tuxedo! (what was I thinking?) My date wore a rather small prom dress, it was only a one-hooper, not the all-the-rage six hoop dress that barely fit into a car. I remember a friend of mine had a Fiat Spyder, and his date's dress barely fit into the car!

Some things for an 80s party:

For Guys:

Polo or Izod shirts with the collar turned up, and preferably two shirts layered with the collars up (why???)

Sunglasses on a string around your neck

Topsiders

Acid-wash jeans

Pegged pants

anything neon

knit ties/skinny ties

Ocean Pacific corduroy shorts and t-shirts

Member's Only jackets

For Women:

Big hair (with the help of Aqua Net!)

Stirrup/stretch pants (too many people who had no business wearing these wore them!)

Big, tunic-lenghth, pastel sweaters

Plastic jewelry

Swatches

Mickey Mouse or Coca-Cola shirts

Prairie skirts/blouses

What the hell were we thinking???

I love the 80's - Strikes Back!

If you want some really great ideas on having a totally 80's event, then you've got to watch the I love the 80's - Strikes Back on VH-1. OMG - I LOVE that series -- I loved the first series too.

It will show you what was really cool, "like totally" awesome back in the best decade of style and fashion

{AXO Alum off to find her jellies....}

I still have my Coca-Cola shirt! I had fogotten about it until I read this post! Mine was mostly blue, with the white part in the middle and red writing. That was one of the few things I kept from the 80's. I figured with Coke I couldn't go wrong as far as collectors go. I always felt really cool with that shirt on - scary.
