ARE THEY FUNNING WITH US? Survey says Minneapolis is most fun city in
U.S.

We're not making this up: Minneapolis has been designated the most
fun city in the United States — way ahead of boring places like Las
Vegas (25th in fun) and New York (a dismal 41st in fun).

And St. Paul and other municipalities can claim a piece of the award
because the survey lists "fun city" amenities that technically aren't
really in Minneapolis. These include such fun things as the Minnesota
Wild hockey team, the Mall of America and even the state's 10,000-
plus lakes.

In an 11 a.m. ceremony today at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
Conservatory, Mayor R.T. Rybak will receive the "fun city"
designation from Richard Tait, CEO of Cranium Inc., a company based
in Seattle (10th in fun) that makes board games.

The game manufacturer commissioned the fun-city list from Bert
Sperling, who did "Best Places to Live" reports for Money magazine
before spinning off his own ratings business. His fun-city rankings
were based on an analysis of such things as sports teams,
restaurants, shopping malls, boat ownership, theaters, toy stores and
the amount of money spent on recreation.

Minneapolis, according to Sperling's report, "has more theaters than
Boston, more parks than Denver, more golfers per capita than any
other city in America — and, with 10,000 lakes in the state,
Minnesota has more coastline than California, Florida and Hawaii
combined."

Top contenders behind Minneapolis were two California locales: Orange
County, which came in second for fun, and San Jose, which was third.
Orlando, home of Disney World, finished 36th. Fun-loving Omaha, Neb.,
by comparison, beat out Mickey Mouse and came in 30th. Dead last on a
list of 56 cities was Niagara Falls, N.Y. Mention that to the next
visitor you take to see Minnehaha Falls.

I heard about that. I actually enjoy living in Minnesota. But I wouldn't say it's one of the best places to live. What do you think Ladygreek?

I lived in Minnesota for almost 3 years in the late 80s-early 90s and I can say it is a good place to live, just too DARN cold!! I could not get with snow from October to May.

There was definately a lot to do, although the nightlife was a bit lacking. Is the Riverview still opened? I was cracking up the first time I went to a night club there and they turned on the lights at something like 12:45. "You ain't got to go home, but you got to get the HECK outta here!!" LOL

It's not like that at all any more. The club times go from 2-2:30 in the morning. I know that may still be early for some, but that's waaaaaaay past my bed time! The Riverview isn't even opened any more! There are a lot of new clubs though. I went to this club called Club Excape last Wednesday to see Syleena Johnson. The atmosphere was really nice. I can't the same about the concert, but I did enjoy myself at the club. We're bringing in a lot of more artists too. We had Rafael Sadiq (sorry if I misspelled) in a while ago, KEM will be here tomorrow, After 7 this Sunday, the list goes on and on. So I must say that the night life has definitely improved.

The cold weather is something that EVERYBODY has to adapt to. It's cold out there right now. I hate that part about Minnesota, but otherwise, I love it.

Yawnn, snooze,& snore. Minneapolis? Why would I want to leave a place with warm weather 9 out of 12 months and 100 big booties per square mile for the Land of Becky the Freckle Faced Fisherwoman.? Eh? Lawrence Welk and the Polka? Prince and His Funky Jehovah Witnesses. Where you can play hockey outdoors longer than you can hoop?

I think Minneapolis is a great place to live, in spite of the cold. I don't know about it being the most fun city, but there is a lot to do if you think outside of the box of just nightclubs. It is a culturally progressive city.

I agree that it is a culturally progressive city. Lots of major companies have large offices there, close knit black community...

I enjoyed places like the Sculpture Garden and Punumbra (sp?) the Black theater company. The festivals during the summers were great too, I just could not get it to that Torch Light Parade (I think that is the name of it) that was in St. Paul in the middle of January. What is THAT all about? Why would you want to be out side at night in January to watch a parade in Minnesota?!?!

One thing I do have to say about MN blacks....y'all stick together. When I was getting ready to leave to move back to AtlantaI had about 6 - 7 different people trying to get me a job with their company so I could stay. I couldn't do it! I would like to come back one day and visit though! In June or July!!

We'd love to have you come back if only for a visit.

The Torch Light Parade in January is the kickoff of the Winter Carnival--the winter version of the summer Aquatennial. I don't do the Winter Carnival. But I do do the nightly Holidazzle Parades during the Christmas season. Downtown Minneapolis is all lit up and beautiful and they really get you into the holiday spirit. Of course if you get too cold you can always duck into one of the department stores and shop!
