What is going on with UGA Rush??

Hi UGAnchora,

I hope you don't mind me being over here in the Delta Gamma forum. I'm a Gamma Phi alumna who lives in Athens. (Not a UGA graduate, however.) My mind is just boggled by what I'm reading. I work at UGA and interact with many students. The DG's who come into my office are some of the most articulate and polite Greek women I have encountered at UGA. I know your housemother pretty well, too. I hope you all have a very successful COB and congratulations on getting 14 great girls!

We're not sure what happened. However, we don't think its that our chapter was just bad at rushing. Many of the girls we called to snap bid just said their "Rush experience" was bad, so its not just limited to our house. We are very positive about COB. Consider this- We had 12(sorry, I know my #'s keep changing...I can never keep it all straight) girls that were given formal bids and accepted them and came to bid day. Then we called girls to snap bid. Some girls weren't sure they wanted to go greek, so we invited them to our Bid party anyway. Well, 4 girls came....1 ended up taking the bid right before Pi Alpha and then this morning I woke up to find out that the other 3 called this morning and wanted to accept bids!! And we're already starting full swing with COB this Thursday. Our goal was to double our original pledge class(12) within 2 weeks, and at 16 New Memebers, we are well on our way!!

This is being discussed on the rush forum too. I am still confused/frustrated about what happened but I'm so glad COB is going well! Yeah!

Hi guys, I'll take 16 who really WANT to be there over 50 so-sos any day.

IMHO, sometimes we tend to focus heavily on what the chapter does and we forget the PM factor. There are women out there who will only accept bids from one or two sororities and that's it! They have listend to the "tent/lounge talk" or they truly believe everyone who says,"you were meant to be an XYZ". They will sign thier pref cards and only put down thier top choices regardless if they went to those Preferences or not. That really screws everybody else up.

FWIW - UGA did have an NPC consultant to come in last year and tweeked thier system. One thing that was found was that no one was really following release figures. Most were carrying girls up to pref. and making heavycuts at that time. So in 2002, the consultant comes in and the results were very heavy cuts early on and lots of disappointed PMs. Things were supposed to work more smoothly this year but obviously didn't. Next year should be the real test to see if they keep the recommendations or start over.

UGAnchora, I think y'all are awesome! As aopirose said, she'd rather have the girls that WANT to be there! I'll take that any day! While numbers might make you more 'competitive' it's the sisterhood that really counts. Your chapters efforts are impressive, and I think that y'all will be just fine! Good luck with your continued COBing, and certainly keep us posted!
