Greek Version of 10 Queries -- (Really 9...)

Sorors/Fellow Greeks please add....Like I asked the other day...why can't we play....here's 10 (oops...I mean 9 questions for us)....

1. Did you decide which organization prior to attending college/while in college/after college?

2. How did you go about choosing your respective organization?

3. Who/What influenced you to become a member of XYZ?

4. Did the members/programs on your yard factor into your decision?

5. What did you do to make your interest known (all the details are not necessary....i.e., pariticipated in campus events; talked to individuals on campus; pledge club or etc.)

6. Were you approched by members of other organizations to be a member?

7. How did you handle that situation in question 6?

8. Most memorable event after becoming XYZ?

9. Any advice to anyone pursuing membership?

I've thought of #10...

10.... If you could change anything about your road to greek life or road after greek life...what would it be? ( ...i.e, I would have pledged undergrad/I would have pledged earlier to have more time with my sands/ships/linesisters/ I would have stayed in contact with my linesisters moreso/been more involved on campus prior to becoming greek/I would have took time out to participate in a step show and etc)

Remember...this is a fun-loving thread...

1.Did you decide which organization prior to attending college/while in college/after college?

Decided while in college, first introduced to Sigma my freshman year.

2. How did you go about choosing your respective organization?
I did my RESEARCH! on ALL four. I went to EVERYONE's events. I talked to not only undergrads but grad members. Read anything and everything I could on Greek life, whether it was Divine 9, the net, fiction, Bairds, magazines. Got to Know the Members....Stayed active on campus and in community. and PRAYED

3. Who/What influenced you to become a member of XYZ?

I LOVED the history and legacy of my organiztion. The fact that my founders began a sisterhood based on education and service, being founded on an all white campus in an all white state during the height of KLANdom in Indiana and STILL having our mission carried on today! that won me. The flair of the chapter I came through (and am in) also won me over. I knew I had to be a member of that illustrious organization, to be a part of Sigma. On top of that , i had a woman who became my sister even before she was my soror.

4. Did the members/programs on your yard factor into your decision?

YES!!! I saw them adding their own flair to national programs and service projects and reaching out to all women, not just sisters on campus.

5. What did you do to make your interest known (all the details are not necessary....i.e., pariticipated in campus events; talked to individuals on campus; pledge club or etc.)

Participated in campus events, community service projects, went to graduate chapter social events, established relationships with the women

6. Were you approched by members of other organizations to be a member?

Yes. My favorite auntie is salmon pink and apple green to the bone :-) 92 years old , she's been a member of your lovely sisterhood for over 60 something years....she as well as a couple close Delta friends, family and otherwise, were vying for me to choose a different path. I have respect for all the sororities, but i know I made the BEST choice for ME.

7. How did you handle that situation in question 6?

I remain respectful and realize that everyone's "search for sisterhood" is unique :-)

side note....one of the things i really admired about my sorors was that they actually told me to go out and look at everyone and to attend every organization's events! I had encountered the "this is the best, look no further" attitude many a time, which while it is great to have pride, remains a turnoff to me

8. Most memorable event after becoming XYZ?

1) my first rhoad trip with my sands to Philly Greek, 2)the first big event that i chaired- i finally got to see one of my "visions" come to light :-0) "SIGMAtization" (it was a spoken word, singing, dance program, which raised funds for a Sept. 11 cause known as the Robinhood Foundation) and 3) countless special moments with my ls and sorors!!! EE YIP!!!!

9. Any advice to anyone pursuing membership?

RESEARCH and don't rush into things. This is a LIFETIME commitment. Fortunately , i go to a 5yr university (classes/coop) so waiting until my third year has still left me with time to serve in an undergraduate capacity. Make sure it is IN YOUR HEART. Do it for you, not for mommy or auntie or whomever. BE TRUE.

Take time out to learn how to stroll and step better!!! ( I am rhythmically challenged ) i wouldnt have changed anything. I have such love and respect for those who brought me into the Light. I have no regrets at all of anything thus far in my greek walk.

My turn to answer

Got busy and couldn't answer my own queries..

1. Decided while in college. The ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. made a big impression on me during Freshman week when they handed out goody bags and assisted us. Prior to that contact, I had the most contact with DST -- My sister (89) and Godmother (71 -- I think)are members.

2. I went to the events of all the organizations/observed the ladies on campus/discussed things with friends and etc.

3. I can't really say that any one person influenced my decision. However, some important people in my life such as my 3rd grade teacher were members of this illustrious organization.

4. The members on campus helped out tremendous. When I saw them handling business with their community service/their style/grace and etc....I was like, I want to learn more about that group of ladies.

5. Talked to the AKA women on campus/had a little group of interested women that helped each other/participated in on-campus as well as off campus events with the ladies

6. Yes...Being that my sister was a member of DST and would come and visit me...naturally people ASSumed that was my choice. A lot of my friends were Deltas and so they assumed it as well. When I didn't show up at Rush...a lot of them began asking me lots of questions. It was really funny...especially thinking back now.... And what was really funny, was afterwards, I would hear some Deltas that I didn't even know say stuff like ...she wanted to be a Delta (I would just stand there and think...if that was the case, why didn't I just pledge DST)....

7. When I was approached, I just played it off like Greek life wasn't for me.

8. Too many....our coming out show....and the chants we said. Singing around the flagpole at the end of it all. Being able to say the word 'Soror'.

9. Be serious about your choice -- this is a life long(physical and financial) committment; Be patient; look at the bigger picture....

10. I would learn how to step. I didn't step at my own coming out show. I was to the side singing the chants.

Re: Greek Version of 10 Queries -- (Really 9...)

1. Did you decide which organization prior to attending college/while in college/after college?
While in college

2. How did you go about choosing your respective organization?

I did research and watched my people around me(friends and family) pledge Que and Sigma(frats) and AKAs and Zetas. After I did my research and watched all orgs closely I saw that I closely resemebled the ideals of Alpha Phi Alpha even though all orgs had good structure and ideals.

3. Who/What influenced you to become a member of XYZ?
No one really, friends always spoke on it but there was no one person that made me want to do it.

4. Did the members/programs on your yard factor into your decision?

Yes and No........

5. What did you do to make your interest known (all the details are not necessary....i.e., pariticipated in campus events; talked to individuals on campus; pledge club or etc.)

Attending events and talking to brothers.

6. Were you approched by members of other organizations to be a member?
Yes.

7. How did you handle that situation in question 6?
I said no or I would think abou it.

8. Most memorable event after becoming XYZ? Besides crossing the burning sands -
Philly Picnic 1998

9. Any advice to anyone pursuing membership?

Always be honest to yourself about what you want to do and why.....once you commit to one stick with it......

Nothing the Lord works in mysterious ways.........I would have avoided one night though when I was on but that is a different story all together....LOL

Soror, acts like she's scurred to start a thread...LOL

1. BEFORE college
2. No other thoughts... I knew!
3. I wasn't coerced or influenced, but that's all I knew, experienced, or wanted. My mother and freinds were Sorors, so that's all knew or wanted to know.
4. nope
5. attended functions
6. N/A
7. N/A
8.after being "pinned"? oh, coming home after immediately becoming a soror, and meeting sorors from the local hbcu, that I didn't know and participating in a program with them at the mall.
9. Whatever organization you are interested, remain active financially and physically. There is more to an organization than stepping and wearing a T-shirt.
10. I wish that I had been born earlier, therefore I would have come in before 1991, then I could have experienced what my Alpha Theta sorors I met at our 50th AKAversary , from years gone by experienced.

Re: Greek Version of 10 Queries -- (Really 9...)

1. Did you decide which organization prior to attending college/while in college/after college?

While in college.

2. How did you go about choosing your respective organization?

I did a lot of personal interviews with family members, high school teachers, and members on my campus. Well, interviews to me, conversations to them. I looked in books (fraternities, too, you never know), on the internet, magazines, everything. I devoured stuff about Greek life. I paid close attention to how orgs presented themselves. I paid attention to the members I came in contact with and how they treated people. I paid attention to how they carried themselves in public. I was all up in it, lol. I realized that Alpha Kappa Alpha was the one for me.

3. Who/What influenced you to become a member of XYZ?

Before making my decision, I thought that you had to lose your individuality to be in a sorority. There was a girl on my campus, and she was SO different to me. She was herself, no matter what, just like me, and we became friends. When she crossed into AKA, I realized that you could be in a sorority and still be who you are. Also, seeing elderly members of ALL organizations made me take it just that much more seriously. Remembering back to high school, and thinking of teachers who still displayed their pink and green pride. After a while, it just consumed me. I KNEW that Alpha Kappa Alpha was what I wanted.

4. Did the members/programs on your yard factor into your decision?

The members on my campus definitely factored into my decision. I listened to the stories of community service that was being performed, above and beyond what Wittenberg required for graduation. That impressed me a great deal, as well, because I began doing community service in high school. I didn't really know that other people were on it like that.

5. What did you do to make your interest known (all the details are not necessary....i.e., pariticipated in campus events; talked to individuals on campus; pledge club or etc.)

I talked to members on campus and went to informationals.

6. Were you approched by members of other organizations to be a member?

Yes, I was, an interest group, if that counts.

7. How did you handle that situation in question 6?

I politely told them that I wasn't interested.

8. Most memorable event after becoming XYZ?

Being able to say SOROR, referring to myself as Soror Monique (I still get a kick outta that, I can't lie, lol), meeting sorors and it seeming like you'd known each other since 1908, my first sorority meeting, singing the hymn (STILL LOVE THIS!!), my first service project, my first regional conference. It's only been 2 years, 5 months and 11 days , but I could go on and on. I think about a lot of stuff with fond memories.

9. Any advice to anyone pursuing membership?

Pursue it with your HEART. Keep in mind that life goes on beyond the organization, it's not everything. You are still a whole person without the organization, it won't make you. YOUR STUDIES COME PHIRST!!!! Community service is a necessary component; if it's not you, neither is a sorority or fraternity. Make sure you realize that it's a lifetime commitment of time, money, and hard work. Speaking for AKA, it's quite a SERIOUS MATTER!!

I wouldn't change anything about the road TO Alpha Kappa Alpha, all of the experiences (both good and bad) has helped to shape who I am today. As for now that I'm in, I'd like to participate in a step show one day.

9. Any advice to anyone pursuing membership?

remain humble and realize that all things happen for a reason. if God intends for you to gain membership, you will. should you gain membership, stay financial and active.

10.... If you could change anything about your road to greek life or road after greek life...what would it be?

i would enjoy the pyramid time w/my line sisters. through the good and bad moments, we grew by leaps and bounds. once we crossed, especially the day after, it really hit home that we'll never be able to spend that much time w/each other again. memories are cool, but there's nothing like actually being in the moment.

Community Service and Merit.

7. How did you handle that situation in question 6?

9. Any advice to anyone pursuing membership?

Please don't join any sorority or fraternity to become a T and T. Our community and children need dedicated/committed Educated African Americans to reach back and help! If you can't commit for life just love yourself and remain Me Phi Me!! Its okay but Greek Life is for Life! Its okay if you can look good in your colors and step! However, can you be DEDICATED to the founding principles of the organization? Ask yourself this question prior to pursuing any type of membership!!!

1. Did you decide which organization prior to attending college/while in college/after college?
Prior to attending, I had an idea, however my experiences during my Freshman year solidified it.
2. How did you go about choosing your respective organization? Observation & Research. After that, there was no other choice.

3. Who/What influenced you to become a member of XYZ? Through observation, the work that I saw that was being done & I loved how no matter where I went, my now sorors, always carried themselves in a ladylike, dignified manner.

4. Did the members/programs on your yard factor into your decision? Yes.

5. What did you do to make your interest known (all the details are not necessary....i.e., pariticipated in campus events; talked to individuals on campus; pledge club or etc.) Participated in campus events, discretely spoke to members concerning membership (I already knew quite a few members).

6. Were you approched by members of other organizations to be a member? Yes.

7. How did you handle that situation in question 6? I politely informed them that I was flattered, however my heart was with another organization. I am still very close to the ladies of both of those organizations to this day.

8. Most memorable event after becoming XYZ? My "mentor" in AKA gave me the biggest hug, I'll never forget it. Then I gave an earth shattering "SkeeeeeeeWeeeeeeee".

9. Any advice to anyone pursuing membership? Be discrete, be humble, and most importantly - be yourself.

10.... If you could change anything about your road to greek life or road after greek life...what would it be? I wish I could have been a part of the 1989 experience rather than being a freshman spectator.

1. Did you decide which organization prior to attending college/while in college/after college? Alpha Kappa Alpha is the only sorority I was exposed to growing up, but I still came to college with an open mind. So, in college, I guess.

2. How did you go about choosing your respective organization? Went to events for ALL the organizations and went with the one where my personality fit best.

3. Who/What influenced you to become a member of XYZ? Soror Mommy , various teachers througout my academic career, and most importantly sorors on my campus.

4. Did the members/programs on your yard factor into your decision? That's what sealed it.

5. What did you do to make your interest known (all the details are not necessary....i.e., pariticipated in campus events; talked to individuals on campus; pledge club or etc.) Attended as many events as possible, got to know sorors through class or other clubs on campus

6. Were you approched by members of other organizations to be a member? Yes.

7. How did you handle that situation in question 6?
Politely declined. Didn't get a lot of congrats from those folks when I crossed, but it's all good.

8. Most memorable event after becoming XYZ? EVERYTHING SO FAR. Seriously, our probate, homecoming, my first stepshow, strutting at my first party, my first Skee-Week, chairing my first event (Parent/Soror Luncheon), being able to call my LS's "soror", being able to SKEE-WEE, being able to take pictures throwing up pinkies and ivies, hearing " '06 " and being able to respond... there's just too many.

9. Any advice to anyone pursuing membership? Be yourself. Learn humility. Know when to talk and when not to. Find other interested ladies you can TRUST and network so you don't miss anything.

10.... If you could change anything about your road to greek life or road after greek life...what would it be? Wish I had more time to spend with my spec and 3 of my LS's that graduated in December... otherwise, I wouldn't change a thing.

1. Did you decide which organization prior to attending college/while in college/after college?
I had an idea prior to entering college. That idea was cemented while I was in college

2. How did you go about choosing your respective organization? But once I got on campus, I looked into and observed the chapters and organizations before i made my decision.

3. Who/What influenced you to become a member of XYZ? My Godmother is a Soror, so she was my first influence/resource.

4. Did the members/programs on your yard factor into your decision? Definetly!

5. What did you do to make your interest known (all the details are not necessary....i.e., pariticipated in campus events; talked to individuals on campus; pledge club or etc.) I attended a few events. Actually, the members didn't even know I was interested until I showed up at rush. They knew me through campus activites and just hanging out. The year I pledged, my roommate was a Delta & there were 5 other Deltas on my floor & they all hung out in our room.

6. Were you approched by members of other organizations to be a member? No.

7. How did you handle that situation in question 6? n/a

8. Most memorable event after becoming XYZ?The MOST memorable was my coming out show. We were the opening for a huge step show the chapter has anually (people are still talking about it ). The love I received from people I had seen but didn't really know and people I didn't know at all was incredible.

9. Any advice to anyone pursuing membership? Be yourself, do your research 7 get to know the members.

10.... If you could change anything about your road to greek life or road after greek life...what would it be? ( ...i.e, I would have pledged undergrad/I would have pledged earlier to have more time with my sands/ships/linesisters/ I would have stayed in contact with my linesisters moreso/been more involved on campus prior to becoming greek/I would have took time out to participate in a step show and etc)Kept better contact with my LS & prophytes.

1. Did you decide which organization prior to attending college/while in college/after college?
In college
2. How did you go about choosing your respective organization?
Growing up I was primarily exposed to AKA (my favorite cousin is an AKA) but once I got to college I took the time to research all of the Sororities for myself.
3. Who/What influenced you to become a member of XYZ?
My experiences and encounters with Deltas in the area and at home as well as the rich and compelling history of the Sorority all influenced my decision.
4. Did the members/programs on your yard factor into your decision?
Unfortunately the chapter on my campus was suspended and there was no activity on my campus at that time.
5. What did you do to make your interest known (all the details are not necessary....i.e., participated in campus events; talked to individuals on campus; pledge club or etc.)
In my pursuit of Alumnae membership, I sought out the chapter in my area, looked for their programs, anyone I knew in the chapter and sent a letter of interest.
6. Were you approached by members of other organizations to be a member?
Not approached but indirectly asked about an interest.
7. How did you handle that situation in question 6? Answered that I was not sure/
8. Most memorable event after becoming XYZ?
[COLOR=crimson] Reading the Soror letter my best friend now Soror wrote for me, which brought tears to my eyes. Getting to call my big sisters and ls's SOROR! Joining committees and working for Delta. Performing in my first step show.
9. Any advice to anyone pursuing membership? Be true to yourself and make the decision that is right for you. If you are not sure that you are committed to being an active member(physically and financially) FOR LIFE...DON"T DO IT!! No D9 org needs another t-shirt wearing non-financial member. If it is the right org for you, you will know even without knowing all the information members are privy to. And if it is right for you, you will be able to wait until your time comes. With no chapter on campus, I had no opportunity to try as an undergrad but Alumnae membership in Delta has been more fulfilling than I could have ever imagined.
10.... If you could change anything about your road to greek life or road after greek life...what would it be? There was a time when I thought my answer to this question would have been pledging undergrad but I realize everything happens for a reason and I would not change all the wonderful experiences I have had in my chapter or with my ls's for anything.

1. I had not decided which organization I was interested in prior to college.

2.In chosing an organization I researced, researched, researched!! I talked to members of the different organizations and attended different orgs. functions and then decided that Alllpha Kappa Alllpha Sorority Inc. was right for me!!

3.My college professers had a great impact on my chosing AKA. These were some successful, educated, strong, community oriented women, who carried themselves with finesse, style and grace. They were fierce!!

4.The programs of Alpha Kappa Alpha are very impressive and I volunteered to help with them even before I became a member. We provide supreme service to all mankind whether it be on the local, national or global level.

5.To make my interest know I attended functions and got to know the members and we would talk on a personal level.

6.Yessssssssssss!! I was approached by members of other orgs. to be a member. My family is full of members of Delta Sigma Theta and members of Kappa Alpha Psi. ( I guess messed up the family color skeem... LOL!! Anyhoo It was quite interesting because I was approached the same time I had been accepted as a candidate for membership for AKA.

7.Discretion was the key. I didn't want anyone to know I was even interested in greek life until after I crossed,so I just brushed it off and acted nonchalant.

8.My most memorable event was Nov.3,2001 My coming out show. I was stepmaster for my line.(Divine 49) Yes, I am in grad. but my line is kinda young. Most of us are between 22-35 so we are fullllllllll of energy. Our show was at the chapters annual cabaret' fundraiser called The Pink Hustle. There were 750 people in attendance(literally... and we sold more tickets than that...we are looking for a place that will accomendate 900 people this year!). It was soooooooo much greek love given to us by the Divine Nine orgs. that night after we stepped. I'll never forget it. That night was magical.

9.My advice to all seeking membership in greek orgs. is to do a self evaluation. What are your reasons for seeking membership. If your motives are substantial remeber to be humble,be serious,be positive,be community centered, work hard to accomplish your goal, and be prayerful. All things are possible through the Lord!!!

10. At the moment I wouldn't change a things.
