Historical/Hysterical House Facts

Your choice. Anything interesting about the history of your actual house?

i.e. The SigEp house at Colorado State was originally built by LXA in 1941. Thanks to WWII, all greek life at CSU suspended until 1946. SigEp beat LXA to the punch in reestablishing themselves, and bought the house. A lot of customized work was done for LXA's Ritual, but was never able to be used appropriately. SigEp has been there ever since. LXA moved to another house until 1974, when it bought the AKL house, but now it's leased to Sigma Pi until LXA returns.

At UNC (Northern Colorado), LXA had 6 different houses in 4 years, one of which was an entire townhome complex off campus. Of the 6 houses, only one remains - the rest were demolished. The one remaining address LXA actually recolonized in two years ago, but have now moved into the original DTD colony house.

Etc... etc....

My chapter house used to be one of the most popular funeral homes in Detroit. They say that when Harry Houdini died his body was prepared at the house.

The Zeta Tau Alpha house at Bama has the same columns that were on the previous house. That house was demolished in 1961 and the newer house was opened in fall 1962. The columns were stored and reused. They are huge!

After 30 + years of young men going through it, we will be tearing it down to hopefully build a new one soon!

-- We don't think our house is haunted, we know it is!!! It is listed in the book "Haunted Kansas"!!!

Our chapter house was originally built as the Alpha Delta local fraternity back in 1929. During WWII, all greek life was suspended at the university, and the houses were used to support the war effort. Our house was used as a hospital...as legend has it, a lady being treated at our house fell in love with a man living at what is now the Alpha Phi house across campus...one day, the man left/died and the woman could not take the sorrow, causing her to jump down the circular staircase in the 'turret' part of our house, from the third floor all the way to the basement, where she instantly died, and has been in the house ever since. Occurances of the ghost happen almost every year, ranging from things that literally scare brothers into the 'fetal position' to unnatural occurences (example: this past year, a brother goes to the bathroom when house is near-empty and returns 3 minutes later to find a huge, extremely heavy dresser was moved across the room. Upon trying to see if a man could of done it, it was determined impossible without removing every single dresser drawer, which could not of happened in the extremely short time he was gone)

After the war, Greek life returned to campus, and the house was put up for sale by university by silent auction. Alpha Delta and Kappa Sigma put in identical bids for the house. However, one of the members of the board was a Kappa Sigma alumni, and secretly added $1 to the Kappa Sigma bid, allowing Kappa Sigma to take out a 100 year lease with the university, which will expire in 2047. Preliminary plans are already being made to try to extend the lease for another 100 years.

There is a hidden 'room' underneath the floor of our living room, about 4-5 feet high and extends for the length of the room (the basement does not cover that part of the house), accessible by going down to the basement, and climbing up through a hole in the ceiling and crawling for about 100 feet. You can also see the room by looking down a tiny hole in the floor caused by an electrical outlet that was taken out. Brothers that have gone into this room in the past have left things behind as memorabilia, ranging from their pledge manuals to athletic 'orange cones' to letters to bottles of Crown Royale for future visitors. It has also been an unofficial pledge activity to go in the room together. Well, 6 years ago a brother was crawling his way between the first floor and basement ceiling trying to get to this room. Before he was able to enter the room, he tensed up and could not move any further, and heard a female voice saying "You don't belong here" - He made like crazy back through that passageway (where there is only enough headroom to be able to crawl on hands and knees) in seconds, through the hole in the basement ceiling into the basement, where he was discovered about 10-30 minutes later by brothers who found him laying in a fetal position, barely conscious, looking absolutely scared shitless.

Before Kappa Sigma leased it's current house in 1947, it had two others since it's founding in 1909. One house, a beautiful tradition Kansas three-story home, literally had it's roof blown off in a storm. At one other time, some rowdy Kappa Sigs led a horse into the Phi Delta Theta house on campus (it was during the summer and the house was empty, but left unlocked as was the custom in the day) up to it's third level. Well, horses can go up stairs, but they apparantly don't like to come down. So the horse stayed there all summer long, leaving quite a suprise for the Phi Delts returning that fall to school (a dead stinky horse with manure all around).
