Should I take this Job?

While I was down in Cancun I got a job offer while I was hanging out watching a Bikini contest at the Oasis Hotel . ..

I got offered a job on the management side of a Spring break company.

I would have to organize teams to go to various colleges and train them to sell packages.

But here is where it would get rough. I would ahve to spend 5 months in Cancun . . and mexico is a third world country.

I would have to set up and go to the nightly parties at each of the clubs. Which mans little sleep and being around alcohol and smoke all the time.

I would have to set up and run all the Bikini and wet t-shirt contests. Interface with MTV or celebrity bands that came down.

And they didn't give me a straight answer on salary . . so what do you guys think? Should I pursue this kind of job?

I really need some advice . .

Dude. That sounds rough. But I'll tell you what the lady in career services keeps telling me: "You can do just about anything for a year."

It will be hard, the sun, the beach, the beautiful women. Maybe you should get out a piece of paper and make two columns-one for pros, one for cons, and then lis.....WTF? Take the stupid job. If the company is legit, it sounds like a once in a lifetime opp that you will be able to tell your grandkids about (well, maybe not).

You could wind up like my dad-married to a wonderful Mexican woman who adores the ground he walks on, and would do anything for him...although he didn't meet her in Cancun, exactly.

Seriously. Who needs a salary?

I'd do some research on the company first. Some can be pretty shady, from what I hear.

I'd then think about how much pay I'd be willing to take as a bare minimum for those conditions- and then stick to it. Maybe investigate the living conditions in Cancun.

So I'd think about it if I were interested, but be careful.

(Only guy I know who gets handed job offers while watching bikini contests. Wait till some of my male friends hear THIS one!)

oh, another consideration- were you talking about your qualifications to the person who offered, or sdid he just realize you had a pulse?

It doesn't sound too bad and you're young so you might want to consider it.

The salary thing concerns me, though. Make sure you get something in writing. You don't want to move to Mexico for a "commission only" situation. A lot of these "entertainment-oriented" companies hire young people for these positions because they feel they can count on their naivete, so make sure you do tons of research and, again, get it all in writing!

James didn't you say this was student city??? If so they're relatively reputable, although I mean, its a student break company. Any of them could go under...its just the nature of the industry, dependent on airlines and current trends.

The cost of living in Cancun is lower, but you make a hell of a lot less, too. If you are going to be down there for more than 6 months you can't use the tourism visa...you have to apply to get an F2 immigration visa.......this could be really hard to do, depending on who you talk to/ how much money you're willing to fork over.
Also, say you want an unfurnished apt.....this means TOTALLY UNFURNISHED. Its not like in the states where you still get a stove or microwave, washer or dryer.....they don't even give you bulbs for the lighting fixtures, and no I'm not kidding.
And you can't rent an apt. unless you have a trusty F2 visa...so you're kinda screwed....although sometimes you will find wary apt. managers who will be willing to rent to you if you have a lot of $$$ up front.

Could be a really fun job, but honestly b/c of the whole visa situation, its not worth doing it for a year. See if you can do a 3 month program with them. (Spring break is last week in feb until 2nd week in april.) Then, you can see whether or not the company is right for you.
Also, I'm confused....you're planning/managing AND going to be at the events???? Sounds weird...usually you're either a managment planner IN THE STATES or you are an event staffer and go to the sites (cancun, jamaica, etc...) what is the situation?

Theoretically, I would be on the management staff here in the states but still end up in Cancun for 4-5 months. Supposedly the company rents a condo for the staff that is down there.

Honstly, unless I am in Cancun for 4 months there is no point really, I can make a great deal more money doing other jobs in the states. The only point would be the experience.

I agree with everyone. Research this company first before you take the offer. It sounds pretty shady to me.

I went to a job interview at an "advertising" company. It sounded too good to be true. It was a three part interview and I got called back to the second part. Well this second part of the interview was going around soliciting money for this "charity" I was like this isn't advertising, it was awful. We finally broke for lunch and the girl who was the interviewer asked me to give her three reasons why she should continue the interview with me. I told her I don't have 3 reasons, this job is awful, I'm not soliciting money, and I am going home. I couldn't believe I stayed as long as I did.

Just becareful. Definitly have everything in writing, research the company, and if this job is not what you expected and you hate it, make sure you can get out.

Well, James, you're only 88 years old once, so if you research this company and it turns out to be OK, I think you should consider it. Just for the experience, if nothing else.

James, I am sure it could be a good time and definitely an experience. Knowing people who have worked in these type postions before, though, I'm going to tell you that you will probably be broke... really broke. But, hey, money isn't everything!

Check out the company, if it sounds legit. and you know you could make an okay living, go ahead and do it. I know I sometimes regret entering corporate America as quickly as I did! It's never too late though... maybe I'll move to Vegas...
