Troubling Newsweek Article

I know that the Newsweek article on Black women has been discussed in other forums but I just wanted to add another perspective.

One of the most troubling aspects of the article and one of the prime reasons that we (Black folk) will always be in a losing position, is the fact that 40% of Black women aged 30 - 34 are unmarried as compared to only 10% of white females. I don't know if people really realize how devastating that is to our communities. That is the prime age of having reached a comfort level in ones professional life, having finances in order and having a solid foundation for rearing children and creating thriving communities. Having the education, the finances, the emotional stability and everything necessary to create a successful family is made moot by the lack of a suitable companion. Conversely, the majority of Black pseudo/make-do families consist of uneducated, financially strained, underaged, single mothers. Everything that signals struggle, unstable families, and weak communities.

The situation will not get any better in the near future. Its not fair. Black women deserve better. There is not a better more beautiful group of women on earth.

Thank you!

I read the article also. Instead of finding it uplifting, I was saddened by the statistics and the relationship part. As an unmarried, educated Black woman, I hate to hear that. But, I know too many women who "have it together" and are single. I don't know what the solution is, but there has to be one.
