Question for chicks who tan....
I didn't want to look stupid and ask the chick behind the counter, but how do you keep your butt from getting burned or slightly baked when you use the tanning bed? Do you put on some sort of sunblock on that area? I got a baby smooth butt, but lately it gets baked each time I tan. Each time is less crispy than before, but it still gets that sunburned feeling to it. At nights I have to sleep on my stomach.
I'm wondering if it could possibly be the tanning lotion I'm using. It's that good stuff that makes you really tan, it costs like 50$ a bottle. I'm sure some of you know what lotion I'm talking about.
Any suggestions?

I always start laughing hilariously when the subject of tanning comes up. . .
Why are white people trying to get dark?
What's wrong with your original color?
Maybe I just don't get the whole tanning thing. Toasting the skin cells with 'harmless' ultraviolet rays on purpose. One of my friends, who is biracial, tans so that people can tell that she's biracial. I just shake my head.
Then again, I guess being black, you don't have to worry about stuff like that. I'm already tan. Lucky me, huh?

CTFU!!! You said it! I am just about as white as a person can be, and I never understood the desire to tan. I guess that's why people always think I'm about 7 years younger than I am.

Could be...
I don't use lotion when I use tanning bed and don't have burning problem at all... sometimes I feel burn-y when I am done, but I don't look it and the feeling usually goes away after a couple of hours.

Valkyrie, I'm right there with you. My skin is so light that it is practically transparent. I have never had a deside to get into a tanning bed and I never will.
After my stepsister had a baby she came up to me and said, "Uh, look at me, I'm so white." I was like, "Newsflash you are white!"
In 15-20 years from now I'm going to look good because everyone else is going to have skin like leather!!

While I'm sure most people tan because they like the look that it creates, tanning can actually be beneficial to those that suffer from depression or SAD (seasonal Affective Disorder).
Many therapists/dcotors may suggest tanning occasionaly, or even a special lamp that creates artificial sunlight, to improve mood, and help battle depression because that dose of light can do wonders.
While tanning often will damage the skin, using a tanning bed once in a while to help battle SAD is a good thing.

I think it has to do with where you live in the country. You probably won't find a shit load of people in Wisconsin who are tanned. In Florida and California you have beaches everywhere. To a lot of people being tanned looks a lot better than being ghost white.
Then again you do have those strange instances where some people look good without a tanned complextion. ( Anne Heche )
And black people can tan.....I have a friend who is black and has complained in the past about being sunburnt.

Good point. Down here, there aren't many really pale people. It has nothing to do with being proud of your whiteness, or whatever, it has to do with trying to acclimate to your surroundings. If you live in Fla, it is nearly impossible not to have some kind of tan anyway, unless you walk around in pants and a turtleneck everyday. Lots of people I know use the tanning bed to even their color out.
And yes, black people can tan. I even know some black people who use the tanning bed (as I said, to even out color).

I personally feel that I look better and healthier with a tan. I definitely don't have a deep, dark tan but I think that a little coloring makes me look better. Certain clothing colors will look better on me. Like UF Pike said, it's Florida where the weather is usually warm all year round (except for the freeze last week....). Today I wore a tank top to class; I'm not going to be all pasty pale and wear a tank top.

I put a towel under my butt when I'm laying on my back in the tanning bed. When I flip over to my stomach, I take it off so I don't get tanlines.

i get very tan in the summer. i have olive colored skin that's very pale in the winter but tans almost instantly, although i use a ton of sunscreen.
it has nothing to do with wanting to be black. i like the look of a tan and i certainly don't want to change my race.
i like the look of a mid to deep tan, especially since i am at the beach 5-6 times a week over the summer.
i will never go to a tanning booth.

The Pakastani woman I used to work with couldnt understand it either. She was like, "in a culture where the media has historically put such an overemphasis on "whiteness" as being the desired, why do you as a white kid, try to get sun?" And ya know, I could never explain it to her. I have since eliminated my exposure to the sun. Skin cancer is prevalant in mi familia. Plus, I dotn wanna look like a wallet when I am 50. Coem on, skin isnt supposed to make a sound when you walk. My aunt was always in the sun and she looked like she used to bob for apples in a deep fat fryer. I never could tell if she was original recipie, or extra crispy. My friend Les has fake baked so much she now looks like a photo negative. She has that healthy orange glow.
