Problems (No Chapter Houses)...

I am working on getting together the year's social agenda. We are brand-new and tiny local, so there are still a lot of "fill-in the-blanks" as far as to what frats and sororities will invite us to socialize with them. But this doesn't mean that I can't do a framework.

I have some ideas that pose a problem because the GLO's on my campus do NOT have houses. These include a Pajama/Slumber party mixer and a traditional toga party. I'm thinking that we could rent a function room in a local hotel for the toga party, but what about the pajama party?

We are on a seriously limited budget.

Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

First, I would suggest that you talk with the other fraternities/sororities. They would know the best places to hold parties, socials, fundraisers etc etc. Especially if they've been around for a while.

Second, why spend the money!?! Lots of the parties we had were down by a river with bon-fires, in sisters/brothers apartments or houses off campus, open fields, unfinished roads/housing development streets, just plain out in the middle of nowhere! None of the fraternities/sororities had houses on my campus either and we managed just fine without throwing out the extra expenses to rent a room. You just can't relax at a party if you're worrying about getting your security deposit back. I'd rent a room as a last resort.

Thank you so much for the suggestions. Do you remember how we were talking about where we're from on another post and e-mail?

This particular response reminded me a lot of the year I spent in WV...we did a lot of outdoor parties there. In fact, I woke up on a mountain my first week of my frosh year of college. Not kidding...and that whole camping under the stars was a totally foreign experience for me...imagine my terror when I found out there were copperheads in the area the next AM!

I will continue to try and be resourceful, but I'm not sure how much we can do outdoors in Baltimore...it's just as scary as WV...except instead of poisonous/carnivorous wildlife, it's because of the high crime rate...

Thanks again though...you are absolutely right about the importance of working with established org's...so hopefully a few will be receptive to us...

Didn't hit me till now that I was talking to you. Yeah, I can just imagine your face at finding out that copperheads are numberous and often seen in the Mts. of WV. I remember some of the people I hung around with at school were a little leary to go to parties that were outside. I guess if you're around it all your life you kinda get used to it and it's not a big deal. And I thought sleeping under the stars in the middle of nowhere was the only way to camp . . . there are other ways? lol.

Information on WV . . .

the week of Thanksgiving, they decided to let school out the whole week becuase so many kids don't go to school so they can hunt (which is an excused absence), so they made it a week long holiday for hunters.

If you are a animal rights activist, I wouldn't suggest moving to WV, some hunters would rather shoot you than listen to you talk about how cruel it is to hunt.

People here wear shoes.

People here own cars.

We don't all live in the mountains in shacks.

Most of us have indoor plumbing.

Most of us have teeth, and yes, we brush them.

There ARE roads here.

Yes, we have Television.

we don't have a house either, but around our campus there are a lot of apartments and townhouses where off campus resident-students live in. we have this huge townhouse where 7 of our members share so that's like our unofficial house. if there is a place of residence where your members are willing to "donate" (they usually do as long as others promise to pitch in with cleaning afterwards!) then you guys can hold your pajama party there!
