Some Berkeley Frats Can Serve Alcohol Again
Sat Sep 21, 2:09 PM ET

Sue McGuire for KCBS-740 AM

(KCBS)--The booze ban at UC Berkeley fraternity parties is being lifted.

Cal spokeswoman Janet Gilmore says about one-third of the school's 35 fraternity houses are no longer bound by the ban because of their record of following regulations on alcohol.

Gilmore says fraternity chapters with numerous rules violations will have to earn back the privilege of having alcohol at their parties.

"Those fraternity chapters that basically have a good record of holding social events at their houses at which policies were followed and events were handled appropriately, those that have good behavior will have the moratorium lifted," she said. But others in violation will "gradually have to prove themselves" to get the privilege of serving alcohol returned.

The moratorium was enacted in April after reports that an increasing number of fraternities were disregarding rules and regulations on alcohol and consumption.

Gilmore says a work group made up of students from the Greek system met over the summer that gave added muscle to the school's defined alcohol policies.
