Road Trip - places to stop

Hi all well... My friend and I are pretty much throwing together a road trip to Arizona to pick up his mom... we are going the week of memorial day and want to see what there is to be seen... We are leaving from Toledo Ohio.... which is in the Northwest corner of the state... Any Suggestions on fun places to stop or a good route to take?? Or nice Camp Grounds???

Hey I go to Toledo too! Anyways... a good place to stop is Colorado, either in the mountains or Dever. It's a beautiful state even if you just decide to drive through

Where you stop and what you see depends on which route you take.

You can start out on I-75 and take I-70 West to I-25 South in Denver to I-40 West at Albuquerque. You'll go through Indinapolis, KC, St. Louis, Denver, past Sante Fe to Albuquerque and then, from I-40, go South on I-17 to Phoenix. (If you have a lot of time, Sante Fe is worth seeing.)

You can also take I-75 to I-70, but go South on I-44 at St. Louis to I-40 West. That way, you go through some of the Ozarks -- but don't really see the Rockies. You go thru Oklahoma City instead of KC that way. The Ozarks are pretty.

Although Kansas is a pretty boring drive, so is across the top of Texas and Oklahoma. And if you take the I-25 route, you actually drive in or parrallel to the mountains for a while.

No matter how you do it, there's a whole lot of country to see. It's amazing how much farther apart cities are here in the West. Having grown up in the East and Midwest, it takes a while to get used to the "wide open spaces." Which reminds me -- don't wait too late to make arrangements for motels or whatever. They fill up on summer weekends (especially holidays) and it can be a very long drive before you find a vacancy. Same for gas. Been there, done that.

Maybe you could go over on one route and back on the other. Pick up a Rand McNally Road Atlas. Also, if you belong to AAA, be sure to get the tour books for those areas. They list just about everything. I also find that their "Triptiks" are a fun way to pace your trip since they break down the maps into shorter segments.

Hi ... when and where are you going to be in Arizona? These's lots to do here. Just remember that it will be hot (upper 90s or hotter) in late May; so, bring and wear your sun-screen.

Depending on what you like and where you'll be - there's the Grand Canyon, petrified forest, painted desert, desert museum, Lake Havasu, any number of casinos on reservation lands.

ERAU is in Prescott but they'll be out of school by the mid-May.

If you take the mid-west route, be sure to stop in St. Louis and see the arch.

Hop on 1-95. It will bring you through many of the southern states. You can take to Orlando and even further south to Miami.

Okay this is totally random, but me and my best friend gave each other this book called "The Bad Girl's Guide to the Open Road" and "The Bad Girl's Guide to Getting What You Want" all by Cameron Tuttle. These books are a RIOT! You should really read them in preperation for your road trip - even if you don't follow their advice...which is often crazier than real!

Depends on the route. Here are some things to see and whatever route you take you should be able to hit some. Of course going down one way and coming back another is an option.

Indianapolis, In - Motor Speedway Museum
Louisville, Ky - Churchill Downs
Bowling Green, Ky - The Corvette Museum and manufacturing plant.
Nashville, Tn. - Opryland, the Opryland Hotel
Memphis, Tn - Graceland
Oklahoma City - Natl Cowboy Hall of Fame, Federal Building Memorial, Bricktown
Dallas - Westend, Kennedy Museum
Texas - Cadillac Ranch
Colorado Springs - US Air Force Academy, Pikes Peak
Colorado - any pass along the continental divide, Independence Pass is right by Aspen
San Antonio - Riverwalk
El Paso - Barnett Harley Davidson
Arizona - Grand Canyon, Painted Desert, Petrified Forest.
New Mexico - Santa Fe, if you are travelling west to east at night be sure to drive into Albuquerque or Las Cruces. Coming off the mountain and seeing the lights of the city is beautiful.

Make sure you go to Four corners. And you have to also at least see the Grand Canyon. It makes you realize how small you are!

Worlds Largest Truck-Stop on I-80, Iowa...... you will be amazed. No road-trip is complete unless you stop here anytime between midnight and 4:00 a.m.

Take route 66!

I can speak from experience, Route 66 was MADE for road trips.. It's thrives on the road trip industry... It passes right through my town and marks the southern border of my school.

This route is highly recommended!

If you've never been here, ya gotta take a route that takes you through texas, and not I-40 through Amarillo. I grew up in amarillo, and its not Texas. Its the part of texas Oklahoma didnt want. You need to see the real texas... Austin, San Antonio, Dallas or even Houston.

Take the interstates to I-44 in St. Louis, following it don through joplin (beautiful Drive), then to tulsa and OKC. There turn south on I-35 to Dallas, then to Austin and San Antonio. Overnight in SA, visit the Alamo, and Riverwalk (texas most visited tourist site), then hop on I-10 for the 12 hour drive out to Phoenix. Seeing El Paso on the way.

gotta see texas.

I pass this damn truck stop everytime i go home and everytime i leave home to go back to school - its HUGE - but its a truck stop, haha
