animal house= not good

When i was in college i joined a fraternity. My father had passed away recently and i wanted a place where i felt accepted. A close friend convinced me to join a certain fraternity because it was "the hardest" to join. We all know what that means.

What i joined was an Animal House in real life. I was ok with this at the time. I just wanted a group that would accept me and help distract me from family problems. I was already using drugs and alcohol to self medicate so i did not complain. I failed out of school. No surprise.

I went through a lot of hazing primarily with alcohol but some other creative stuff as well. The majority of it was unacceptable and was ended during my time there once i became a brother. Im not sure what else to say here but the hazing i went through still has negative repercussions to this day. DO NOT tolerate that crap. It is not worth it. I still have problems with alcohol that stems from those days.

As a disclaimer the fraternity i joined is very anti hazing but individual chapters do what they do. The specific chapter is also now in step with their national organization.

Your headline is faulty. Have you ever actually seen Animal House? The heroes of the movie (the Deltas) didn't force anyone to drink, and the only drug use took place outside the fraternity, nitiated by a professor. The villains of the piece, the Omegas, were the ones who hazed.

I'm not sure what other point your post has...you came in with substance abuse problems and expected a bunch of 19-20 year old guys to be detox counselors?

33Girl I think you meant to say it was the Omegas that hazed.

Seguing to the topic of Dartmouth (for the OP, on which "Animal House" is loosely based), there is a ver interesting article on campus culture in today's on-line edition of The Washington Post.

OP, I think what you are trying to say is that a wild fraternity culture will not solve the problem of "fitting in" but can make any exisiting substance abuse worse by providing cover. It's not that you thought they were detox counselors but that you thought you might run away from your problems. You are right that hazing is not a good thing, and I hope you have found some counseling to help with your problems. It is good to hear that your fraternity has worked to get your chapter on the right track.
