University of Alabama Sororities?

Hi. I will be going through recruitment this fall. I have most of my recs and have read everything I can find about Alabama and rushing. I'm so excited. The only thing I can't seem to find is the costs of the sororities. I went to preview weekend and the sororities were all so nice. Are the sororities with the newer houses more expensive? Is there a way to find out what each sorority costs? Is the price difference minimal? Thanks for any help.

Thank you for your reply. They only give ranges and I've heard some are even more expensive than fees listed..... I am wondering which sororities are the higher range and which are the lower range and how much in extra costs I should expect. I've heard old row pays more than new row because they pay for that status, but is it less expensive to be in old row than new row in a brand new house...... Thanks

Some GLOs have extra fees called assessments that are tacked on as the year happens, which could drive costs over the predicted costs. Some do not allow assessments as a matter of course. Can someone better explains "assessments" for me? Also there are the fines that one earns for failing to do certain mandatory required things. Fines are avoidable, but some people do not make avoiding them a priority and so that too can drive of the cost of membership above what is shared.

wait...what? They PAY for STATUS at Alabama? You buy it? Oh. That explains ... nothing. Nevermind. Nope. Just, no. *scratches head, looks puzzled* No, that can't be it, surely not.

Then again... on second thought... oh, I really shouldn't. I won't. It's killing me, but I'll be good. At least I'm not annoyed.

Pick up a phone and call the office of Greek Life. Ask them for the cost of first semester new member and spring semester member dues for each and every chapter in the last year.

Honey, Old Row has moved to New Row...and in much bigger houses. and the ones who haven't are planning to. Didn't you see all the signs at Preview Day? And check out the PH website for where everyone is moving and who's enlarging. It's EVERYONE! I don't think you're going to get exact figures here for any chapter. You can ask when you go thru recruitment and they do have to share than info with you. The problem is - what if you are aboslutely in love with - and they with you - the high end group? Do you refuse to go to their events and risk losing the opportunity to maximize your options? Very risky. Read the section about maximizing your options and understand that they can remove you from recruitment if you refuse to attend a party you are slated to attend. Only you can decide if that will be OK for you.

Seriously, whatever the dues, parlor fees, etc are, plan on also having the money for at least one formal a year (and all that entails), big/little sister gifts, "just because" gifts, and such. I pledged years and years ago (think Carl Sagan) and was told to expect to spend at least an extra $200 on the extras - I'm sure it's more like $2,000 now.

I have a D in an "old row" house at bama and her roommate was in a new row house. I compared our dues to one another and though ours was a bit higher I later found out that ours was an "all inclusive" price, meaning it covered just about everything. The roommate still had to pay for a pin and other things. I would loosely budget $8,000-$10,000 a year for living out of the house.

Remember that this also covers your meal plan. The girls eat at the house M-F for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You will automatically be taken off of the campus meal plan when you accept a bid.

As far as outside fees, the only thing my D has purchased is goofy stuff for theme mixers and one or two formal type dresses (one long and one short). If you have these already, they can be re-worn. The girls in her sorority even set up a facebook dress exchange and borrowed each others formals.

The All Access meal plan at Alabama is $1,578 per semester so $3,156 a year.

So you are saying sorority costs per year are between $5k and $7k?

If you can't afford the highest figure mentioned, don't rush. Period.

And Old Row doesn't necessarily indicate where the house is located now. A group could be "Old Row" in status and have a house on "New Row." Confusing, I know.
