Such an amazing actor with a miles-long list of characters. Just when I thought I had him pigeonholed with military or tough guy roles, I saw A Catered Affair with him in a role as a father (to a young Debbie Reynolds), husband (to Bette Davis), and taxi driver. And he was so touching in The Poseidon Adventure.

A great American icon--gone but certainly never to be forgotten!

He was just a pleasure to watch in films. What a long and great life he had.

What a range of characters Ernie played for a guy so plain and not handsome.

From Fatso Judson, to McHale and Marty!

Will be sorely missed.

They just don't make them like they used to!

RIP, join your many friends my friend!!
