Thumbs up Civil Rights Anniversaries

1. Tuesday, May 17 marked 57 years since Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. It overturned Plessy v. Ferguson and declared unconstitutional state laws that established separate public schools for Blacks and whites.

School (and residential) segregation has never gone away, hence de jure and de facto. But, yay, nonetheless.

2. Freedom Riders: May 4 and May 17 marked 50 years since the first Freedom Ride left Washington, D.C. and was supposed to arrive in New Orleans. Big ups to the Freedom Riders (Blacks and whites) who fought the good fight, even when it did not end as they had hoped, knowing that this was a violent and constant struggle.

Civil rights are all of our rights. They also never expire. We must never be passive and complacent.
