Archery

So, I read a book once that called the main character something that really describes me: an Enthusiast. Not a Sports Enthusiast, or a Music Enthusiast, or a Quilting Enthusiast - just an Enthusiast. It means I get excited about something new and dive right in headfirst and learn everything about it/practice it/live & breathe it...then I get tired of it and try something new. Past Enthusiasms have been: Softball, Japan, the Smashing Pumpkins, Karate, the Holocaust, Mexico, the Ocean, and Saved by the Bell (to name a few).

So, recently, I've gotten the itch to try archery. I don't know why - I don't really want to kill anything, so it would be targets only. I'm not particularly hand-eye coordinated, so I don't know if I'd be any good at it...I just want to try. In googling, I've decided that I would want to go with a traditional longbow - nothing fancy or modern-looking (would take the fun out of it). I've also found out that between the bow, arrows, target, a quiver (did I mention that I usually go all out with stuff?), etc...this could get somewhat expensive. Any suggestions on how to make this happen on a budget?

Also, if anyone else is an Enthusiast like me, feel free to share your new Enthusiasm.

I don't know anything about Archery, but I'm really enthusiastic about flying. Once I'm all done with school, I would love to learn how to fly. For me, once I take an interest in something, or something I'm really enthusiastic about, I generally stick with it. I have a lot of hobbies that I'm very enthusiastic about, from assembling dollhouses, to astronomy, to insects, to paleontology. But I've always wanted to learn how to fly, I just never took it as far as my other interests and hobbies.

Wow. That sounds like me! Once I get a hold of something, I practically do osmosis with it (which bothers everyone around me because they have to listen to me yammer about it).

I think a good amount of GC knows this story, but here goes. About 2 years ago, I randomly decided to be a figure skater. It was actually on a bet: my friend and I were thinking about things we wanted to do in childhood but let the dream die when we got older. So, he was going to sign up to be a volunteer EMT and I'd be a figure skater (he punked out on his!!). I was 22 and plus-sized (and--gasp!--black ) but heck I had two good legs (and good ankles!) so why not?! Long story short, there was lots of classes (and skipping levels--who knew I had talent!) and I eventually stopped out of classes and hired a private coach. I'm telling you, this one was EXPENSIVE hobby but it's worth it for how it makes me feel. It's a great workout and, when you land a jump, you'd swear you were just flying! Now that I'm back in Cali, I've located a new coach and am getting back to it. At first, I thought competing would take the fun out of it, but I think it could be fun at this point. My training schedule was thrown off with moving but maybe next year.

My newest enthusiasm: The Spelling Bee. I've loved them since I was little, but never went national (I was 6th in my county). Well, I found a National Adult Spelling Bee and it takes place.....next weekend! I'll let you know how it goes!
