Anti-Jewish hate group protesting in Great Neck, NY this weekend

A hate group from Kansas is traveling to New York this weekend to demonstrate against Judaism.

Article from The Jewish Star, an Orthodox Jewish paper based on Long Island

Article from Newsday

Great Neck is about 90% Jewish, and has about 15 synagogues, including the Great Neck Synagogue, which is an old Orthodox shul and is one of the planned protest sites. There are a lot of Orthodox Jews in the immediate neighborhood, as Orthodox Jews cannot drive on the Sabbath and must therefore live within walking distance of a synagogue.

It is, of course, no coincidence that the protests coincide with Shabbat Shuvah and Yom Kippur.

On a personal note: My parents live in Great Neck. I'm concerned for them, but they plan to attend church as usual (they are Catholic) and otherwise to stay away from the protests. I hope they stay safe.

I hope no one on my side gets hurt, but if gets violent, it gets violent.

I hope the JDL and all of their affiliates are out in full force.

I know that sounds mean, but sometimes morons need a good ass kicking.

They were here last week for Rosh Hashanah. It was disgusting, but most of the community/school supported us, and it was a great opportunity for education.

How are they picking their protest sites, dart board?

Last year, we performed The Laramie Project- one of their hatreds. In response, a friend of mine organized a giant silent protest. We all just stood there, in silence. Shirts were made that said "Love, Not Hate". There were some with signs, but most of us just stood there. It was amazing.

They left early, and only had about 3 people there. They couldn't come onto campus, as it is private property. But the counter protest was still amazing.

Groups like that are an embarrassment to believing Christians.

Agreed. Tolerance is one of the biggest things that we teach, but zelots like that seem to forget it.

I don't think Christianity (and most mainstream religions) teaches tolerance. It is difficult to teach tolerance and acceptance when there's an understanding of "to dos" and "not to dos" to get into the Kingdom. So, it should come as no surprise when zealots get a hold of all of these religions and their texts to suit exclusionary purposes.

I also don't think that people have to love in order not to hate. They can be apathetic. Many people are apathetic until there is some threat to their sense of balance and normalcy. That's when groups like this tend to be formed. So, preaching love to them silences them at the time but does not erase what they perceive to be their founding purpose.

This group has the right to nonviolent protest. I hope it remains nonviolent on the part of the protestors and the community.

There is a difference between a lack of tolerance and teaching about sin. True Christians know that you tolerate everyone, but sin is sin.

There is no difference between teaching about some of the "sins" that many "Christians" consider to be "sins" (based on their interpretation of Scripture) and being intolerant. And notice I said "to dos" and "not to dos," which is not exclusive to "sin."

"True Christian."
