USC rush experience for an Asian girl

I recently transferred to 'SC and signed up for rush. The more I think about what I'm getting myself into, the more nervous I get. It seems like the majority of the Greek population here is white. I'm partially worried that I will not fit in with everyone else.

Secondly, I have rush on some of the rush days. By missing out, I am also afraid I will be at a disadvantage from the start. I contacts the recruitment chair and they are willing to work it out with me. After asking whether or not I should just bail out on the entire process, I was recommended I should not. I have also heard it's a great way to meet people.

I don't know. Does anyone have thoughts on this?

I don't know about being Asian as I don't go to USC, but it's hard to say how you'll do if you have to miss recruitment days.

To be honest, missed parties = fewer opportunities for the chapters to get to know you.

Depending on how USC does things, they may be able to work things out for you to meet as many chapters as possible, but that is something that the recruitment chair or one of the Rho Chis/Rho Gammas will know more about.

They may or may not be able to.

I think APhiAnna is from USC, so if you PM her she may be able to answer some of your question.

I think she meant class.

Umm far be it for me to point this out, but isn't the reason for being at a university to go to class? Skipping class to go to a recruitment event seems like a bad idea to me. Recruitment is important, but education is moreso.

I don't know if this is true of USC, but there are rules about this in place at other universities. They say that if you skip class for recruitment, you're automatically dismissed from the process.

First of all, if you look at the USC Panhellenic site you will see Asian women in all sororities. Are they in the majority? No. But seemingly not at a disadvantage. If you want to join an Asian interest sorority you have that option as well.

When my older daughter went through rush at SC she had a class conflict during first round. Yes, her rho chis tried to reschedule, but frankly she was dropped from all the first night houses immediately. When the house that she was most interested in dropped her the night before Pref after finding out that she missed rush due to a class...and the sister came out of the closet she was dropped. (Please do not say that we don't/can't know what happened in the meeting. We do. Daughter's best friend was in the meeting and the families have been friends for over 40 years.) Friend told all.

I will say that I supported my daughter's choice to go to class. This was the choice that was hers to make.

A potential choice you could look at- would it be possible to attend this class at a different time? Does the professor teach the exact same class, but in a different time that you could attend?

Thanks for all of your replies. I checked my schedule and it looks like I made a mistake. I will only be missing part of the first conversation day. I don't know which houses I am going to miss, but as long as I get to see the majority of them I'll be happy.

I guess I'm feeling intimidated because it seems like SUCH a social school. I haven't been that social in a while (I was at one point). We'll see how next week goes though.

Hello,
The sororities at SC, as in many western chapters, have many Asians as sisters. There are also international students who are members. About 25% of the student body is Asian. You will find sorority members who are of Indian, Hispanic, Pacific Islander and African-American descent.

Be sure to have a frank talk with your parents/guardians about the costs involved in sorority membership.

References for each chapter are strongly recommended.
