What do you know about Greek life at...
UVA, University of Kentucky, University of South Carolina, Florida State, Purdue, Indiana University - Bloomington, Auburn, Clemson, or UGA???
These are the schools I'm considering and I was wondering if anyone from these schools could tell me what Greek life is like, what some of the reputations are (just curious - I do realize it's best to make up my own mind). I've already seen the websites, but they don't tell you everything. You can email me directly if you want...TLJ841@aol.com
Thanx,
Tami

In some of the Rush forums, which in the wake of the server shutdown may have been lost, there are pretty detailed descriptions of some of those schools' Greek systems. I don't know anything about those schools, but I know there are people on here who do. Best of luck!

The best thing you can do is log onto those colleges' Greek Life websites--some are very comprehensive.
The Greek systems at Auburn and UGa are extremely powerful and it's not exactly easy to get into the sorority of your choice at either place, especially if you're from out-of-state. There are just lots of girls who are well-known to the sisters and alums already, not to mention tons of legacies to the larger and "more Southern" sororities. That being said, you can also have a fantastic Greek experience at either place!
I imagine that Greek life at the other large Southern universities that you mentioned would be more or less the same--including the rush experience.

Sorry I can't help you out, but I do understand what you are trying to get at, and in my opinion some of the replys here offer absolutely no help. Obviously, at some schools the greek system is very strong, where even the weaker houses on the campus are some of the best houses in that organization, which is something I've discovered here at Nebraska; example--I have a friend in XYZ frat at K-state, I checked out this GLO's house at Nebraska during rush, and didn't really think it was strong enough for me. I had talked to one of my friends brother (an active) and he swore to me that the chapter at Nebraska was one of the best in all of XYZ.
Of course on the flip side there are campuses where the greek system is poor, either b/c of lack of involvement, or sanctions, or apathy.
I guess the best advice is to visit those campuses if you can. See if you can meet with some one from Greek Affairs while you are there, and ask them about grades, involvement, what percent of Greeks and GDI's are on things like Mortar Board (national Senior Honorary) and stuff like that. Also ask about philanthropies, and stuff like that. Also if your tour guide is a student ask them. Just beaware that they may be Independents and anti-greek. I hope that this helps--feel free to send me a personal message if I can be of anymore help.

Geoff is right on the money. Also check out the newspapers (if available online) of the schools you are interested in - they will often tell a lot about Greek life and what is going on and how prevalent it is.

I'm from South Carolina, and though I chose to go out-of-state from college, I know about the Greek Life scenes at USC and Clemson...
Very similar to other large Southern school. There are hundreds upon hundreds of girls who go through rush and of that, many are legacies. It's VERY COMPETITIVE, because they already know girls from their hometowns, high schools, etc who are rushing. I know that for me it was very intimidating when I visited friends...
That being said, if you choose to attend a school like this, DON'T BE SCARED. Be confident in yourself and be real to the chapters. The best way to stand out is to present yourself as a poised, composed, self-assured woman who isn't flaky or fake.
Wherever you go, I hope you find a Greek experience to call your own!

At UK rush is competitive but I haven't met anyone that went through rush there that didn't get a bid (I am sure that there are some). There are some really great chapters there. Currently the ADPi chapter there is the largest, followed by AGD and then I can't remember. I also know that the chapter of AXD is recolonizing from what I hear. Other than that, just go to google.com and type in panhellenic university of kentucky it should pop up and you can look at grades, numbers and award info for all the sororities there. It is a little more laid back than the SOUTHERN schools, but I guess it is still really tough. I can give you an AGD at UK's email address if you need it and I am sure she could tell you more! Sarah

The greek system at FSU is represented in 12% of the student body. It's not as dominant as say Auburn or UA but it still has its "power" It's a fairly diverse and very active system. As with many universities these days it's facing its fair share of opposition from the administration. I could say lots about the system but I don't know what you want to know. I'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have
