Texas Hill Country Flooding 2025-Camp Mystic
Campers are still missing after floodwaters came through the century old camp.
I recall reading threads where many women in Greek life had a connection to Camp Mystic.

A beloved girls' summer camp in Texas Hill Country is reeling after a deadly flash flood swept down the Guadalupe River on Friday, leaving families in anguish and a community clinging to hope.
Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp that has welcomed generations of girls to its riverfront grounds for 99 years, was hosting 750 children when the floodwaters struck.
Thirty-six hours later, the scale of the disaster is still unfolding: 27 girls from the camp remain unaccounted forand the body of an eight-year-old camper has been recovered, state officials said Saturday.
As rescue teams are working around the clock to find those still missing, as families face a wrenching uncertainty about the fate of their daughters, who were meant to be spending an idyllic summer rowing, riding horses, and playing tennis at the camp

This is absolutely horrifying and I've been sick about it since I heard. I did hear today that they found two girls alive, hanging in a tree.
Was the connection that girls ended up knowing each other from camp? or did sorority women work at these camps?

Both. These Hill Country camps often have women from similar neighborhoods and walks of life, and by the time they get to college (often UT), they have a ton of sorority members who vouch for them and get them in.

Jenna Bush Hager shared that her mother former FLOTUS Barbara Bush had been a counselor at Mystic. The Bush twins and their mother are all members of Kappa Alpha Theta.

LBJ's daughters also went there -- one was later a ZTA at UT Austin.

A friend was in the house when Lynda was--she said that the security agents were always in the way.

This morning on Instagram was a long post from KKG Hdqtrs. regarding the long-standing ties of Kappas to Camp Mystic. A photo from 1982 shows several Kappas who both attended and were counselors—one of them is Tweety Eastland (UT) who, along with her husband, perished. The Eastlands owned and managed the camp.
Listed also are resources both online and in TX for those sisters who are grieving or need financial assistance.
In the photo were the schools the KKG women were attending including UT, SMU, A&M and Vanderbilt. I would imagine that many sororities could post camp connections.

⬆️ Mea culpa—I was incorrect. DICK Eastland died, but his wife “Tweety” is still alive. The camp has been in their family since the late 1930’s.

I've been sick about it, too. All last week, my social media feeds have been full of friends sending their kids (mostly daughters, but some sons too) to sleepaway camp, and how excited everyone was. I can't imagine what everyone is going through. My heart goes out to those survivors; they have a long row to hoe.
Camp Mystic seems like an almost magical place to spend summers. And apparently people put their daughters on waitlists when they're born? James Avery has a whole line of charms devoted to these camps.
