My TiVO box also serves as the box for my DirecTV. So I tune in the stations on that box, while also setting recordings. You need the phone line so DirecTV can download the schedules and whatnot to the box every night. I think you can splice a phone line into it. I have only one phone outlet (with expandable phones) but I just have a double telephone outlet in the phone jack.
As for how to watch one station while recording on another. I have TWO satellite lines running into the back of my box. So one can be recording a show while I switch channels with the other feed. I can also record two shows at the same time when I am not home or in bed.
I am no gadget geinus, but it is pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Sorry if I confused you....
