I volunteer as a counselor for a Christian divorce recovery seminar. One thing that is stressed is to take responsibility for your part in the break up of your marriage, and to apologize (if feasible). It's terribly cathartic, in most cases.

In this case, it seems (to me, anyhow) more like Charles is going through the motions so that the marriage can receive an Anglican blessing, and he can eventually be Head of the Church of England.
