I don't know if there's a specific thread
but the reason is so they can be an objective sounding board for the rushees. The rushee needs to feel free to say "I don't want to go back to Mu Mu, I had a terrible time there" without fear of offending her rush counselor - it would be hard to do that if she knew her rush counselor is a Mu Mu.
