I thought your computer gets one every time you log on. So, on a LAN, you'd just have one for awhile, but a dialup you'd switch pretty frequently.

I'm guessing that's not right, though, or an IP check would be pretty pointless.

Even dynamic IPs are issued in 'blocks' corresponding to the physical area that you 'dialed' from - the odds of two computers dialing to the same bank of computers (or college dorm complex, or dsl routing station, or etc) are relatively small.

When I talk like this, it is quite difficult to have sex.
