I know that once you make it past a certain point, you must sign a contract saying that you're the "property" of American Idol for a set period of time, regardless of whether or not you remain or stay in competition. You aren't allowed to sign a recording contract with anyone until your time with Idol is over.
That's according to Jordan Segundo, semi-finalist from two seasons ago.
