In the federal court house last night, I did have to go through the metel detector, and send my bag through the scanner, but I didn't have to sign in or show ID. I overheard another woman say that she got through the security with a knife in her bag that she had forgotten about.
Hell, the state workers compensation office here in Pittsburgh has higher security- you at least have to sign in there.
