Fraternity Expansion at Duke: Pi Kappa Phi

Pi Kappa Phi will expand to Duke (a recolonization) in fall 2005. Excerpts from the article in the March 1 Chronicle:

This fall, Pi Kappa Phi fraternity . . .will begin formally recruiting new members.

Pi Kappa Phi . . . has already begun contacting upperclassmen in order to establish a strong set of potential pledges. Sophomores, juniors and even seniors are eligible for recruitment during a special rush season that will be held in the fall.

This semester, the fraternity’s leaders said they see building relationships with these older students as critical to the colonization process. Although they are prohibited from rushing in the fall, freshmen of the Class of 2009 will also have their chance to join during regular spring rush.

With the initiation of its new members this fall, Pi Kapp will be returning to Duke after ceding its position on campus five years ago. The fraternity’s position began to dwindle in 1996 when changes in campus housing undermined Pi Kapp’s situation.

“There weren’t any violations, or any shady stuff,” said Cal Majure, a Pi Kapp Leadership Consultant. “We just sort of missed the boat in terms of setting up housing.” The organization officially left Duke in 2000, when its last members graduated. . . .
