I personally am a member of our student goverment, elected to serve for students who live off campus. We in the middle of our push for a freeze on tuition hikes.
I was involved back in my undergrad days. Chaired a committee and all that stuff. These nationwide tuition hikes have been pretty amazing. I feel like our state schools are not only failing in their mission to give affordable higher ed opportunities, they are willfully giving up.

ETA: Back when I was doing my TV News/Anchor job with the school's TV Station, I had the chance to interveiw the outgoing Chancellor of the Board of Regents for Higher Ed in the state of Oklahoma. What he kept showing me, and what he seemed to be the most proud about was that he had kept the rise of tuition cost to a minimum while in office -- and it had not even risen at the same rate as inflation.

The year he left office, a new gentleman came in. He, and some political friends managed to get the tuition increase cap removed, and double-digit tuition hikes have become the order of the day. Our large state schools are justifiying it because they want to meet the "Big XII average", and our regional state schools are justifying it so that they can fund their classrooms on the same level as the bigger fish.

There's been a pretty major shift in how administrators see tuition. It used to be a necessary evil, now it's a honey pot.
