I've never played D&D, but my husband and his friends used to play back when they were in middle school. I don't think they had any very elaborate scenarios... they just created powerful characters with powerful weapons and beat up on the bad guys - or each other.
Has anyone played live-action role-playing games? At my alma mater, the Assassins' Guild runs several LARPs each year, some of which run for ten days! I played one once (a one-evening game), and my character actually survived (though he was about to get killed when the game ended - yeah, my character was a guy). It wasn't really my thing, though, so I never officially joined the Assassins' Guild.
Things like this definitely have their place, as long as they don't take over your life to the point where they interfere with school/work/family ... as with any pastime.
