When you're living your character's life outside of the game - i.e. if your character is a priest and you give up sex. Or when it interferes with your studies or life - you're playing instead of going to class. Same as anything else you get involved in, I'd say.
Conventions for stuff like D & D isn't any different, IMO, than the people who are straight laced accountants all year and when Buffett comes to town, they put on a grass skirt and get drunk and stoned enough for 10 people. And there are LOTS of those. Everyone needs some sort of outlet.
