Back when I was a lowly pledge, there was a large headline in the pledge manual "Don't call it a frat". When I later edited the pledge manual, I left that out, I think, since nobody seemed to be using that term.
Today, if you search for "frat" in Google News, every day you get dozens of hits, as "frat-boy", frat party, the journalism frat, the sports frat, and so forth are common. Much of the press seems to feel that calling any statement or action by George Bush "frat-boy" or "frat house" or "frat party" makes a negative point.
Nowadays, I don't use it, except when copying a line from the story.
