True...the main point is to be smart about it. Don't do anything that will leave you out on the street.
It's definitely not easy, but don't be blatant. Don't talk about it loudly, don't ask questions like "So, say I was leaving your company. Would you be a reference for me?"
I'm going through it right now; it definitely adds another stress to the day-to-day work situation, but if you're careful you should be fine.
