My understanding is that the anti-opal superstition applies only to engagement rings. An opal engagement ring is bad luck unless the bride was born in October. The same is true of a pearl engagement ring - a pearl ring is bad luck unless the bride was born in June.
Other jewelry is ok. (I hope it's ok, as all AEPhi badges include 27 pearls, and I was not born in June!)
