Funny enough way back in the day the Cornhuskers used to be called the BUG EATERS. I remember listening to News Talk 1110 AM radio and they had some lady who was a HUSKER fanatic and had all this trivia. I know Herby Husker has always been the mascot, but the nickname is quite interesting. I think it had to deal with the Great Depression and the grasshoppers that once swarmed the crops. I could be WAY off on that one but it sounds logical.
