Their reactions were definitely out of line, I will agree.
This weekend, I took my daughter and her friend to the mall to go to Build A Bear for her birthday. They wanted to eat at the food court. My daughter is one of those peanut allergy kids. We ordered sandwiches and fries from the Great American Steak booth. After she ate the whole cup of fries, she got a strange look on her face and told me to read the cup. It said, in fairly large letters "Great American Steak Fries, deep fried in peanut oil". She had no reaction. They aren't really using peanut oil because if they were, I'd have been calling 911. She ate half a cashew cooked in peanut oil this summer and was in ER getting epinephrine, benadryl and steroids via IV because her throat closed and she was completely covered in hives. I'm so thankful that they weren't really using peanut oil.
