I grew up in South Florida so I know a lot of the good places to go in the Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach areas. I can't think of anything else to add for what you should do while in Miami besides maybe taking a day cruise if you have the time.
Like AlphaSigOU said, Spanish is the main language there. Miami is almost like a different country in itself!
South Beach is pretty expensive as far as nightlife goes. It's costs a lot to get into the clubs and the drinks are pricey. Coconut Grove is much more inexpensive. You could travel a few miles north to Ft. Lauderdale and go to Riverfront (downtown Ft. Lauderdale). There's lots of good bars there and most won't charge a cover fee. West Palm Beach is a pretty far drive from Miami (over an hour) but Clematis Street is a lot of fun.
