This is true. I went 5th year alumn also and when you do this, you are told that you can't have contact with the chapter. I think Nationals even sent me a letter saying this. However, I believe you can attend an event if you are personally INVITED by the chapter. I was annoyed at first because the reason I went temp alum is because I only had one semester of school left and in order to be considered active, I had to live in the house. I had an awesome opportunity to move into a house with 2 roommates, but I had to move in during the summer before fall semester. Obviously I was not going to move back into the house for one semester when I had this other opportunity and then worry about where I was going to live in the spring. So, I chose to take 5th year status.
I think the reason this rule exists is that technically since you are still a student, you are able to be an active member of the chapter, therefore you should not be able to have all the perks an active member has since you chose to go 5th year alum. I really wouldn't worry about it though. I didn't have any issues during my one semester of temp alumn status and I imagine you won't either.
