Many of our questions of our etiquette expert sister were unusual circumstances such as "What if someone else uses YOUR bread plate and the person on the other side of you used the correct one?" Same could be said for water glasses, since some are easily confused. We also wanted to know what to do if you had a pit, bone, etc in your food. She said you can extract the food in the same manner that you inserted it. So, if you ate it with a fork, use the fork to remove it. If you ate it with your fingers, use your fingers. Put it under the rim of the plate and be as discreet as possible when doing this.
There are very basic things that everybody should know. The one that kills me is when the first person served just digs in before everybody at the table is served. Also, if your meal is taking much longer to be served, it is best manners to encourage the others to start their meal rather than sitting there staring at their food while it gets cold. Being thoughtful and considerate of others is the most important point, I think. It doesn't take long to learn which utensils to use for what or where to put them.
