I didn't put that much thought into the ending. I'd assumed that Marky Mark (minus the Funky Bunch, apparently) landed on Earth (hence the Lincoln Memorial), but at a Wrinkle in Time, another gap in the Space-Time continuum, so to speak, so it was an alternate time possibility. When I was reading another review of the film, the reviewer indicated that Tim Burton had put all these "clues" throughout the movie to hint at the ending to come, but I must have missed ALL the clues, as did the other 5 people with whom I attended to the movie.
I thought the movie was "ok". Although the racial analogies between US/earth and the ape planet were nice attempt...I kept thinking "Amistad" when they had the branding and the neck chains. Clearly, that was not sitting well with me at all. Secondly, I kept thinking "Four Legs Good, Two Legs Back"...Amistad and Animal Farm. There were a few niggling holes in the story that kept bothering me as well.
