I hope I'm not going to ruin the movie for anyone who hasn't seen it... so don't read the rest if you don't want it to be spoiled!
My bf's theory is that Thade somehow figured out how to go back in time because he was trapped inside the ship, but he wasn't dead. So then he somehow got to Earth and changed everything. I don't know... doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, but it's a theory.
