I think another reason the cast was older in the first few seasons is they picked people who actually LIVED where they were filming (NY, LA, San Fran) and those people could go on with their jobs and lives. From London on they've uprooted everyone. There aren't many people, other than college students or young people with "McJobs", who can just pick up and go for 4 months.
