This mentality is well-noted in college football - why do you think Florida teams always have bowl bids nearby? They don't travel well, and this is given as the reason.

Just look at where warm-weather schools wind up in games that have an option (ie not the big-4 BCS bowls), then you let me know how well they travel.

So yeah, we can talk about how great the fans for USC or UCLA or Miami or FSU or etc can be - but attendance figures historically don't back it up for the warm-weather coastal schools, simply b/c of the lower draw as a 'vacation' for bowl travel.
