One problem with debit cards: If your credit card is stolen and the thief uses the card before you report the theft, your maximum liability under federal law is $50. For debit cards, it depends on when you report the theft; if you don't report it within 60 days of an unauthorized transaction showing up on your bank statement, your liability is unlimited.
