A Yankee swap is when you pick numbers out of a hat. The person that gets #1 gets to go first and picks and opens whatever gift they want. Then #2 opens a gift and has a choice to keep that gift or trade it for #1's gift. #3 can trade with #'s 1 and 2, etc. Then after the last person goes, #1 gets to go again and trade for anyone else's gift.
